OMV Raid Probleme

ryecoaaron : Could you please shortly explain, when to use unionfs plugin and when the mergerfs? Thanks.

They both do the same thing and both use mergerfs.

Use the unionfilesystem plugin if you want to pool entire drives. It is easier for noobs to use as well.

Use the mergerfsfolders plugin if you want to pool folders using absolute paths.

  • ryecoaaron: Thanks four your reply. I want to merge my two HDDS in the NAS. When I open my finder on my Mac I want see one single drive there! But in the NAS there are two WD reds (and in the future I want to add two more =4). On this new drive (2x12TB) I want to add one additional partition called TimeMachine for my Mac Backups with about 1TB. (Two partitions on two HDDs, one with 1TB and the other with the whole rest).

Now i merged these to HDDs to one partition (one drive in mac finder) with RAID linear. Cabrio Leo said I should not use RAID0, so I used RAID linear - I only want to merge these two WD reds. Now I want a partition on this drive with 1TB. And this I should do with unionfilesystem plugin. But I'm not sure how to do it correct. What means create policy or minimum free space?

    thanks a lot

The concept of partitions is old. You should format both drives in the OMV web interface which will put one partitions on each disk. Then pool both disks with unionfilesystems. Where you wanted to add partitions before, you should just create a shared folder. The readme on the mergerfs page - https://github.com/trapexit/mergerfs - will describe the create policies.

  • ryecoaaron: Thanks for your message. So you say it is not state of the art to partition disks nowadays?! Ok - I try your proposal.

But it it important that the new partition or "shared folder" (or what it means/is) has a defined size, otherwise TimeMachine does not delete old backups and it uses (over the time) all the space on the NAS to create new backups - only when it is a limited volume TimeMachine startet to delete old Backups when it reaches the disk limit!

Sorry but I can't profit from the helping file, too much text and where is the relationship to the GUI inside OMV? Now I need a manual what to! I would try it this way:

    1. wipe the disks again in the GUI of OMV? (storage-disks-wipe)

    2. what's about the raid management? Is it fine? delete here raid linear and merge in 2.?

    3. create one filesystem from two HDDs? (storage-union filesystem) what to do explicitly? Branches: NAS? Create policy? What means minimum free space? I want 1TB (disk, volume, folder or what it means), what options to set?

    4. add a user? (Acces Rights Management - user) I see there is already a user

    5. share folders? (Services - SMB/CIFS - enable, shares - add)

Sorry for asking, but it is hard for me to understand - I'm from the old school and I used always partitions to do such jobs but I'm open minded for new things :)

Yes, you should delete the linear raid, because it is as unsafe as RAID 0. Did you read my post #24?

A raid array created with OMV has no partitions. Linux doesn't need them.

That is dumb that timemachine can only look at the full disk size instead of having a setting. Maybe quotas would work? I don't use timemachine so I don't know.

  • I'm back :)

    so, what I did:

I delete the raid linear, wiped the disks inside OMV, create a new filesystem and then I used the union filesystem plugin to create one drive.

After this, i created a user and shares (which, by the way, are working - I can transfer data to this folders), great thing :)

Now the next challenge is here to create the "shared folder" using mergers folder plugin. I look at the settings windows, I look at GitHub page you mentioned. But I doesn't know what you are talking about. epall, epff, mfs, eprand... what? where? why? I have a GUI to set it up, or?

I can't choose a path there and a size and I do not understand what to set up there.

Up to now I'm not familiar with quotas - google says there are many guys with problems using TimeMachine.

you are old school as well :)

I hope I can manage this project before I get a meltdown :)

Now the next challenge is here to create the "shared folder" using mergers folder plugin.

You should probably use the unionfilesystems plugin unless you don't want to pool the entire drive. It uses mergerfs too.

look at the settings windows, I look at GitHub page you mentioned. But I doesn't know what you are talking about. epall, epff, mfs, eprand... what? where? why?

Ignore the short name (that is used in the fstab setting). Notice how the plugin says "existing path, most free space" and you can see "epmfs (existing path, most free space)" in the policy grid on the mergerfs github page? That tells you what it does. You are worrying too much about this. If you really don't understand what it does, just leave it at the default. The defaults are safe.

Up to now I'm not familiar with quotas - google says there are many guys with problems using TimeMachine.

It was just a suggestion. Since I don't use timemachine, I didn't know if it would work. If you must use partitions, you will have to create the from the command line but mount them in the OMV web interface.

  • so, thanks a lot. I managed it to create another "shared folder/partition" (or what it is called :-))

Both have the size of the entire disk (24TB) - is it just that easy? why don't you told me :)

Now I want to limit the size of the folder/partition TimeMachine to 1TB - Quota is greyed out :(

I think too that I'm worrying to much about some unimportant details.

Do someone else know something about limiting a TimeMachine folder?

    Quota is greyed out

The quota would have to be on the filesystems of the pool disks since fuse (mergerfs uses) doesn't support quotas.

BUT, a quick google and I found this for timemachine - https://dongknows.com/steps-to…up-storage-under-control/

So, you can change how much timemachine uses with just this (on the Mac):

  • So, I did it.

ryecoaaron: It does all not work :( I could not manage a second partition with a defined size. Now I testet and used LVM, great, there you can give a defined size for each partition. it works - so I think I have it - thank you very much for your help and time.

    Externer Inhalt www.youtube.com
