[HOWTO] install PIHOLE on OMV5 using portainer WEBGUI on a MacVlan

Greetings,
since this thread already exist, I figure is better to continue.
if you consider is off-topic, I will create a new one.I am also interested on pihole.
I noticed a latest docker-compose: https://hub.docker.com/r/pihole/pihole
However, this is Version 3
I understand (please, correct me if I am wrong) that to run version 3 docker-compose, I need to install Swarm.
But I also read around that can break previously version 2 installed images.. or some similar side effects.
Question:
1 Is it true?
2 any way safe I can install docker compose Version 3?
Thanks
-
Consider installing the Pihole docker using docker-compose instead of as a stack in Portainer.
-
totally agree.
But that is the problem... is version 3
and does not seems to be accepted if not installing Swarm first.
Or am I wrong?
-
I think you might be wrong.
-
"compose file version 3 is not supported"
I have the above error when I try to deploy the stack
.. and above the editor this is written (among other info):
"Only Compose file format version 2 is supported at the moment." -

Where is this quote coming from?
"compose file version 3 is not supported" is a deep red message on top right corner after trying to deploy.. goes away after a few seconds.
The other: Only Compose file format version 2 is supported at the moment.
is right after the Stack name .And it stays permanent.

This was my suggestion in post #5 above:
"Consider installing the Pihole docker using docker-compose instead of as a stack in Portainer."
What part about instead of as a stack in Portainer did you not understand?
-
.. quite a message here!
I guess I dont know than!
I thought a docker compose is code to add to the stack itself.
I understand from you message (sounds quite upset) that is not.
Could you point me out where is the docket-compose option in the left pane menu? (if there)
Additionally:
all of my docker containers come from https://hub.docker.com
In there there is a docker-composer
The contents of the docker composer I copy, adjust to my server and deploy the stack with it. Since they have been all version 2.x, I never had problems. This is my confusion.
Where do I copy the docker-compose from https://hub.docker.com to portainer?
Thanks for you help

docker-compose is not within the OMV GUI. It's is run in the shell. Here is the web site for it:
https://docs.docker.com/compose/
I don't use docker-compose myself, I create containers from docker run commands.
I "translate" what I find in docker-compose and docker-create files into docker run equivalents and run them in the shell.
Or, if I have to I use Portainer and input the data piece by piece if I don't have a version 2 docker-compose that I can deploy as a stack.
Many ways to get there.
Is there some reason you can't use or adapt the version 2 docker-compose file in the above cited tutorial?
[HOWTO] install PIHOLE on OMV5 using portainer WEBGUI on a MacVlan

no, no particular reason.
I will try it tomorrow.
I would not know the difference between the 2 versions.
Thanks for the explanation.

So... appreciate for your link reference.
I am trying to understand the script and adjust it to my network needs.
But I miss some explanations:
lines:
10: I dont have a domain name. maybe I can use pihole.local?
16: whos IP is this? pihole?
27: whos IP is that? (in example is different from line 16. )
28: as per line 10, would be the same ? ex.: pihole.local ?
All lines from 39:
Is it for a DHCP server? does this means that pihole would deliver IPs?
If so, can we comment them out as I have a router tat gives IPs?
no need to define gateway?
Again, I probably make questions that for some are obvious... I guess not for me!
If you or anyone would be willing to help out, Thank you.

10: yes, you can use pihole.local
16: This is the IP that you want to use pihole in a macvlan ( please read about macvlan on dockers).
27: The IP of your NAS where you run the pihole docker.
28: same as 10
39 and ... -> the MacVLAN that you need to create., please read 16

thanks,
will give it a try..
will read more about macvlan...
