Coming from unRaid...thoughts on this system

  • I have an unRaid server that has some hardware problems. I have been trying to diagnose the issues - but no luck. It locks up at least once every few days. Needless to say, it's not too usable right now (and I am 99% positive it's some hardware issue and not unRaid itself).

Ok, backstory out of the way. I decided I'd give OpenMediaVault a try. I have an Intel 2600k with 16GB of ram (motherboard manual says 16GB is max - otherwise, I'd have upgraded it). I have an 8TB and 6 3TB drives available to use right now.

With unRaid, I use it as follows: Dockers run Sonarr, Radarr, Sabnzbd. I have Plex running on a different Linux system (uses autofs to mount to the shares on unRaid).

My unRaid system has 48 TB of storage - it's about 60% full (movies, tv shows, home videos, home pictures). My plan is to copy over some of the data to the new system until I figure out what is going on with it (or maybe replace it eventually).

Any tips/advice? I know the 2600k is old (I've had it for at least 8 years now) - but it is sitting idle and I need a system. I'm also curious what the experience is like compared to unRaid. (I like unRaid - easy enough to use when my system is not randomly locking up of course!)

  • Also worth a look in Mini ITX is the https://www.asrockrack.com/gen…3558D4I-4L#Specifications

There is a concern about how many drive ports are actually available though. See this review:

Here's another review stating the same, it seems like a bad reference board for NAS...

Also the manual supports both reviews in regards to this aspect. That board might be the most deceptive board on ASROCK's website. I understand the limitations but, when you see 2 mini SAS HD ports you can see some kind of allurement that's really a gotcha.

It's definitely deceptive. If you compare the pictures of both boards on the ASRock site, they appear identical to me. This suggests to me that the the lesser board might be crippled in the BIOS. The better board does look like a good alternative to the difficult to find C2XXX boards.
