I am using an old Dell 790 that I have upgraded the cpu and memory. I installed OMV5 from the image obtained on the OMV site. I have two USB external drives...one containing my Media the other Backups. I can write to disk in putty logged in as root. When I try to record a tv show on plex I get a "no write access to destination" I am not a novice but neither am I a pro...especially in Terminal. I don't know where the access issue is...OMV5, Docker, Plex? Or do I just need to change the permissions for the Downloads directory on sdb1 where I want to put the recordings? In any event I don't know how. I would appreciate it very much if someone would write me a terminal command, or tell me where to change the permissions in OMV or just what I need to do. I can change ACL on the shared folder page in OMV5...but I don't know who to give permissions to. My instinct is just to change the directory permissions to the Recordings folder using putty...to make the folder writeable. I have run plex for years without issue before I upgraded to OMV5 and installed it via Docker. Everything else seems to work fine. Thanks!

Maybe this helps:

Thanks macom for your help. I understand what you recommended...I just don't know how to do it...or where. Everything works fine...I think...except recording. It appears the responder (VO) to your instructions changed ownership of the shared drive. I was thinking I could chmod the folder on the external usb drive and be done with it. I just can't get the syntax right...in the console or ssh via putty.
Could you write out an example of the syntax? I sure would appreciate it.

Can you post the PUID and PGID that is running your container?
And also permissions of the folders and files your media data are in?
-
Maybe this one helps you:
[How-To] Install Plex Media Server (PMS) container using OMV and docker-compose
-
PUID= 998
PGID=100
In add shared folder in OMV the permissions were set to Everyone read/write...if that is what you ask for.
-
You should not run the container with PUID=998. It should run as a user you created in the GUI of OMV.
The first user you created gets the UID=1000.
Lets say, you have a user lynn and you want to run the docker as that user. You will get UID (or PUID) and GID (or PGID) from the CLI with:
id lynn. All users created in the GUI have GID=100.
To get ownership and permissions correct take what gderf wrote in the post I linked:
ZitatThe user the docker container runs as must have sufficient permission to access the media files and folders, and the container config folder.
This means at least read permission on your media files, read and execute permission on your media folders, and read, write permission on the directory that the /config docker container path is bind mounted into.
Here is explained how to check and change ownership and permissions:
-
I finally got it working and I want to thank you all for your help...you and the article authors. I worked in Windows for so many years...Linux is coming hard but I do much better with a GUI than the command line...so far. Thanks again for your help.

If you are unable to write to your USB external drive for recording TV, there are a few things you can try:
- Check if the drive is formatted properly: Make sure that the external drive is formatted in a file system that is supported by your TV. For example, if your TV supports FAT32, make sure that the external drive is formatted in FAT32.
- Check if the drive is compatible: Make sure that the external drive is compatible with your TV. Check the TV's manual or specifications to see if there are any limitations on the size or type of external drive that can be used.
- Check if the drive is recognized: Make sure that the TV recognizes the external drive. Try connecting the external drive to a computer to see if it is recognized. If it is not recognized, try using a different USB cable or port.
- Check if there is enough space: Make sure that there is enough space on the external drive to record TV shows. If the drive is full, you will not be able to record anything.
- Check if the TV settings are correct: Make sure that the TV is set up to record to the external drive. Check the TV's manual or settings to see if there are any specific settings that need to be configured.
- Try a different drive: If all else fails, try using a different external drive to see if the issue is with the original drive.
-
This is not about accessing a drive directly connected to a TV. It is about using Plex to scream media from a drive connected to a NAS.
