Experience with NanoPi boards

  • Hi all,

has anyone got experience with NanoPi boards. http://nanopi.io/

I am looking to build a a cheap home/small business fileserver, also running a few tools like OpenVPN, (maybe Nextcloud).

The seem to be fairly good value and can be run with Linux or Friendlywrt.

I would be interested if anyone has used one of them and what the view was in terms of performance and reliability.

    thanks

If it is supported by Armbian - https://www.armbian.com/download/, it is probably a decent board. I really like my NanoPi M4.

  • The M4 looks very similar to a Raspberry Pi 4. Are you using it as a OMV based NAS? Performance is sufficient? Have you installed the 4x SATA HAT?

I have the original M4 with 4GB ram and SATA hat. Works great. I imagine the newer V2 model is just as good. If you are not going to get the sata hat just buy a RaspberryPi4.

I agree with Agricola. I got it because the sata hat is not connected via usb. The board has very good performance.

  • thanks both. If I get the 4x SATA Hat, what kind of casing are you guys using? ANy recommendations? Should be fairly compact.

I also probably need a pretty strong power supply running 4x SATA drives, even if just 2.5'' drives.

  • Wow. Very big casing. -> good airflow. How many HDs make up your 8TB?

I was looking for a much smaller casing, something of this size (a Synology 212 series)

One. But I have five 2 TB hard drives in my Helios 64 and it is using a 12V, 8A power supply with no issues.

Has anyone got experience/feedback on FriendlyWRT?

I have an older version of that board running openwrt and it works well.

Great. The board is no throughput bottleneck?

Are you running OpenVPN or any other programmes.

This FriendlyWRT seems amazing. Apparently you can even launch Docker images on that little box.

Not for me but I'm not using VPN. And you wouldn't have to run your vpn server on that system.

FriendlyWRT is Linux and can run docker. The R2S with 1 gb of ram could run a couple of small containers. It has plenty of cpu power to do it.

Have you found a simple way to configure the Openwrt firewall? Something like Linux UFW? I have the device but their website doesnt really explain properly howto run the firewall.

Not sure what you mean. It blocks all incoming ports by default. Are you trying to open a port?

  • How can I be sure it blocks everything by default? The setup tables look so complicated.

For example, I want to Ssh into the device via WAN uplink but make sure that noone can Ssh further into the LAN.

openwrt is a router distro. That is what it does until you tell it not to.

You would open port 22 and forward it to the device's internal IP. I do this for a few devices on my network (although I am using pfSense).

  • I've tried the neo4. Tested three available OS's from their website (FriendlyElec, Lubuntu, and Armbian). The only lubuntu was adequately responsive. Also, Bluetooth did not work on lubuntu. Watching videos on youtube- Audio playback is bad and jittery. Hope someone has an idea how to fix this.
