Moving from PC to RPi

  • Hi! New user here.

I currently have an external hard drive (formatted for windows) connected to a windows PC with file share on, but want to build a more "proper" NAS, using a Raspberry Pi 4 (8 GB). Before I start, I have some questions that would be nice to now the answers to first:

    1. Is the RPi a suitable platform for such a NAS with Openmediavault?

    2. The current hard drive is formatted for windows. Can I use it or do I need another, empty drive (and then copy everything to the NAS once it's set up) and, if so, how should I format it? Ext4? ZFS?

    3. The files are arranged into folders that should have different access restrictions. Am I correct in that Openmediavault can handle multi-user access?

Thaks in advance. Any and all help is appreciated.
