Install OMV on Google Cloud or AWS ?

  • Hi all,

I'm been using OMV more than 7 years, and really like the system and the community.

Lately, I'm thinking should I migrate my system to the cloud to save resources and power consumption.

    Please share your thoughts.

    Thanks

I just assumed most people going with OMV we’re leaving the cloud to take back control of their data. Seems odd to use OMV as a vehicle to go the other direction. For me if it were only a consideration of resources (cost) and power consumption (including my time) I would never have started this project. But there are other factors I’m concerned about.

  • tinh_x7 go for it, technically it requires a container to be configured. There is at least one thread for this topic in the forum.

For the future of OMV being able to run it in a container has several advantages, but getting there will require effort!

2x 6TB 3.5'' HDDs (CMR) formatted with ext4 via 2port PCIe SATA card with ASM1061R chipset providing hardware supported RAID1

  • I just got the OMV installation done in the GCP VM.

It requires a lot of work to do for networking and security, which I'm new to this.

My server is still working great in the past years.

I'm not sure about this cloud route yet.

  • Great to hear, would you please publish the config used (here or better in this thread)

container have advantages on your local computer too!

One great benefit is that installations of other applications don't prevent OMV from working.
