well at least you know that, check out unionfs and snapraid plugins
So I only have to look for a sata to (motherboard)usb connector.
Just search for sata to usb, this won't create another problem but you may have to do an update-grub + it should be possible to set the m'board bios to boot from from that usb device.

That's selecting the boot option from the boot options menu, you need to enter setup which is the main m'board bios and set/enable usb boot from there, and if possible to set that SSD which is now connected to usb as the first boot device.

No, that should be disabled, I know you have this connected to the internal usb, have you tested an external usb preferably on the back
Actually it is connected to the back USB 3.0 port on the outer back (and not internally) .
and you're still going into emergency mode
