SFTP: Slow ~2MB/s upload from internet per file while 35MB/s LAN upload per file

  • Hi @ all,

I have a problem with OMV SFTP that I can't explain myself, nor an IT-professional.
A friend of mine have to transfer ~1GB backup-files from his homeoffice to my OMV on Pi4 in my homeoffice.
First we tried normal FTP, but ran into a 2MB/s limit per file Upload. Then I installed the SFTP Plugin, Port 666, but same problem. Still 2MB/s per file.
Then he tried to upload to my external webserver with SFTP: ~5MB/s per file, which is aprox. his upload-limit of his connection.
Then I tried uploading from my pc to OMV via local network via SFTP: 35MB/s per file.

    Now I'm confused.
We also tried to use VPN between my FritzBox 7590 router and his PC to avaoid possible ISP limitations to SFTP connections... same. 2MB/s per file and maxed out connection with 3 files at the same time.

I use a Raspi 4 4GB, wired with gigabit to the FritzBox 7590, my Connection is 100Mbit/40Mbit, his connection is quite similar, but mostly a bit better then mine.
OMV, all up2date ( 5.5.23-1) and SSD via USB3 on the Pi. And yes, he's uploading to the SSD, wich isn't the problem because I still can upload with 35MB/s localy.
We used FileZilla Client, WinSCP and a third SSH/SFTP software, all the same.

Does anyone have any explanation, why only his connection to my OMV has a 2MB/s per file limit, but not to an external server nore myself via LAN?
Could it be my ISP with throttling or the router? Or is there any setting I have to set for incoming external IPs in OMV?

If you need any logs or settings, let me know. But please tell me where they are, since I'm not an expert.

    Thank you

  • Having the same issue. 1G FIber connection and can't get uploads faster then 2MB/S over the internet. Downloads seem to be much faster around 16-24 MB which is more respectable but still slow for 1G. Not sure what it is i am using OMV 6.X. I have AMD Ryzen server with 32G and a ZFS pool. Can't be hardware related

  • Your internet speed is 100Mbit/40Mbit. You are then quoting upload/download speeds in the MB/s ranges. Big B is Bytes, little b is bits, there are 8 bits in 1 Byte. so your 100/40 when expressed in Bytes is 12.5/5. Keep in mind then that you will almost never completely saturate your internet bandwidth because of protocol overheads, with it more often than not meaning about 2/3 to 3/4 of the actual bandwidth usable and your 12.5/5 all of a sudden looks more like 9/4, which then means that your 2MB/s x 3 files = 6 out of that 9 or so that are really available, and it doesn't look nearly as bad.

Throw onto that the fact that you are using a RPi, which is not an extremely powerful processor, and I am not surprised at all.

I'd suggest you install and runs speedtest on your system, then you will see if your system can make use of the speed. If it can, great, the problem may be drives, or implementation of the ftp server, if it can't, what is your network speed, network card speed, and is it wired or wireless?
