Need help to upgrade old NAS. Lots of questions.

  • Yesterday I received the new SSD I ordered and started my definitive OMV installation.

Last week my first NAS, a Vantec Nextstar FX, stopped working so I took its 2TB HDD to use in the OMV. And since I no longer have use for one of the older HDDs (the SATA2 160GB), it will remain in the configuration.

At this point, I deployed OMV with clamav, omv-extras and NUT. On a near horizon are Docker, portainer, Nextcloud, SWAG, Transmission (or qBittorrent) and an undefined DLNA container.

I'm still not sure how to emulate the behavior of my old NAS in OMV. Both Vantec and D-Link showed only the shares allowed to users. If a certain user was not allowed to read a share, it remained hidden by the NAS. Can anyone point me how to do this?

    Best regards.

A partial solution to this is through samba. Uncheck the navigable option. So that folder doesn't show up unless you know the name. You search for it by name in the browser and you see it.

There may be a more elaborate method. So that it appears to one and not to the other.

This solution is not suitable in my case as I will not be the only NAS user. My wife and kids will use it too, and they are substandard IT users.

Now a terrible setback: the 4TB external drive I was using to back up the D-Link NAS data has passed away (needle noise). I just don't have a large enough media to move the data.

DLNA do not work well on bridge containers, need to be host containers to work.

and if possible for you it's better to use plexor simmilar (eg: jellyifin) to do the same

  • I'm trying to follow @macom's nextcloud+swag guide, but I am receiving an odd error:

    Quote

Cannot issue for "*******.tplinkdns.com/": Domain name contains an invalid character (and 1 more problems. Refer to sub-problems for more information.)

My url has only letters and dots! Anyone knows how to solve this?

    Best regards.

  • What about the slash / after the .com???

  • Now I am geting this error:

Certbot failed to authenticate some domains (authenticator: standalone). The Certificate Authority reported these problems:

    Domain: www.*******.tplinkdns.com

    Type: dns

Detail: DNS problem: NXDOMAIN looking up A for www.*******.tplinkdns.com - check that a DNS record exists for this domain

Edit: It seems there is a problem with my ISP. I had already asked for repair but it will stay in its present state until monay morning, at least.

    Best regards.

  • Still struggling with OMV.

After my ISP restored the service, I was able to finish nextcloud and swag install. Then, I proceeded copying my files from the old NAS to OMV. That took forever. When I finally finished copying the files, things went very bad.

First, I copied the pictures stored in my 4TB NAS to OMV. I took it for granted that all went well. But sometime later, I found that a LOT of the pictures had corrupted in the process. There is no way I can open the corrupted ones. This is not so bad, for I still have all of them in the original location. But it was a huge loss of time.

Second, since my external 4TB backup HDD broke down, I was forced to copy some data from the 2TB NAS to a temporary location then moving the HDD to OMV. I created a file system and a share in it, then I copied all my old backup to it. After this, my OMV was turned off for over a month, until today. I bought a 4TB HDD to replace my external backup unit and was about to continue the data migration to OMV. I turned the system on to perform eventual system updates and despite the 2TB HDD is showing in OMV, its file system is listed as “missing”!

I don’t know what happened and I don’t have backup of this data. I am really annoyed and completely lost. So, again, I apreciate any help anyone can provide.

  • fdisk -l got me this:

    How bad is this?

  • Not gonna get into your DNS error as you say it is your iSP, but why do you need nextcloud to move your files from the old NAS to the new nas?

There's tons of other (and probably faster and more efficient) to move the files... I guess unless you're wanting to share your whole server over Nextcloud, which makes little sense to me...

  • this is a weird error, which makes me think about a potential HDD firmware issue (best case) or a HDD defect (worst case)

Did you run a HDD SMART health check for this disc?

omv 6.0.40-2 (Shaitan) on RPi CM4/4GB with 64bit Kernel 5.15.61-v8+

2x 6TB 3.5'' HDDs (CMR) formatted with ext4 via 2port PCIe SATA card with ASM1061R chipset providing hardware supported RAID1

omv 5.6.21-1 (usul) on RPi4/4GB with 32bit Kernel 5.10.63 and WittyPi 3 V2 RTC HAT

    2x 3TB 3.5'' HDDs (CMR) formatted with ext4 in Icy Box IB-RD3662-C31 / hardware supported RAID1

For Read/Write performance of SMB shares hosted on this hardware see forum here

Did not need nextcloud for file migration. But since I lost an HDD, I was implementing nextcloud while buying another HDD.

    For moving files:

This -> doc will demo how to use remote mount and Rsync (in OMV5) to duplicate shares between your old NAS and a new install of OMV. If set up in a similar manner, you could have a backup device / server.

Thank you. I will look into this, but what I am deseperate for is to find a way to retrieve my data.

Did you run a HDD SMART health check for this disc?

Yes, but SMART doesn't show any problems.

I looked up the fdisk -l error, mainly the sentence "GPT PMBR size mismatch" and "Partition 1 does not start at physical sector boundary", and found that some newer hard drives use advanced format (4096 bytes per physical sector instead of 512 bytes per sector). It should have run at 512 bytes/sector via some kind of emulation, but something must have gone wrong since the first use of the drive and yesterday's session.

At least the partition is in the drive and if I can get it in phase with the new 4096 bytes/sector system, I can get my data back. Still studying it, though.

  • Unfortunately, I had to RMA the motherboard. It happens that the NMVe connector was somehow faulty since the beginning. I don’t know if it’s a mechanical, electronic or logical problem, but this was the reason I thought Netac SSD had issues (and I changed it for no reason).

The motherboard itself is from a cheap local maker, and they didn’t provide much information about it. It´s owner manual is noting more than a page and lack even basic information about the product. I hoped that the board quality was not even with it’s manual.

I am still waiting for the vendor to pick up the motherboard and deliver a new one.

    Best regards
