I didn't know about the "X" chmod feature. Pretty cool.
From the drive's root I just did
sudo find . -type f -exec chmod 666 {} +
gave me -rw-rw-rw- for all the files, left the directories alone.

I generally find users either understand how to set permissions properly (and if they don't, they research how).. or they go crazy and just 777 everything (more often than not)

That really isn't the point (at least IMO). If your network is compromised.. anyone who can connect to SMB (which is anyone who knows how to find network shares) can do anything they want with your data w/o logging in.

Your folder setting is 775. Others can only read, cannot write. It is the standard OMV configuration for any shared folder. Don't worry, you and your wife are safe.
If you are very concerned about this you can change it to 770, others cannot read.
