Add additional drive

  • Hi,
Some time ago I installed omv on a raspberry pi 4 with an additional 4TB HDD. Now the time has come and the HDD is full. I would like to add an additional new one to that.
Is there a way to extend the first drive with the second one?
I have a bunch of docker containers and don't want to set up new paths. Also the folders that are shared with SMB should be distributed over the two drives but only shown as a single folder.
So lets say I have a 'Media' folder that is on the old drive. when I add new files to it they should automatically be stored on the new drive when the old one is full. But of course be accessible through the same folder.
Is LVM the right tool for that?
Is there any tutorial on that?
    THX

    I am running OMV 5.5.19

  • Hi,
sorry for the late reply and thanks for the tips.
Is there any documentation or tutorial on it? When I search for it I always get results about mergerfs, unionfs and snapRAID which all seem to do similar things which is a bit confusing to me.

unionfs creates disk joins. mergerfs creates folder junctions (on different disks). These two programs are alternative.

SnapRaid creates a disk array with parity. This program works independently of unionfs or mergerfs, although they are usually used at the same time.

If you want to join the information from different disks you can choose between unionfs or mergerfs. You don't need SnapRaid. In OMV6 there is only mergerfs.

If in addition to that you want protection against the failure of a disk (or several), you can also use SnapRaid.

There are no manuals in OMV on the use of these programs, you will have to consult the documentation of each one on their website.
