Change from FreeNAS 9.2.1.5 to Mediavault

  • This may be a dumb question, but I going ask. I currently have an old PC running FreeNAS 9.2.1.5. with 2 terabytes of space and a RAID 1 setup. Its been running for about 7 years. I am seeing intermittent problems with my PC/system. If I migrate to Open Media Vault I will loose all the data on the drives when I mount them, correct? I do have a backup on a Buffalo NAS, it just takes quite a while to transfer 1.4 terabytes of data.

  • What filesystem format are you using with FreeNAS?

A backup strategy is worthless unless you have a verified to work by testing restore strategy.

  • I'm interested to know why you'd migrate from FreeNAS on an old system to OMV on a new system. I see the main benefits of OMV as being Debian-based (familiarity) or because it uses fewer resources/power than FreeNAS (16GB now recommended, 8GB is fine). That said, I'm just in the process of transferring data from my Synology and I'm using netcat.

With the speeds I'm seeing I would imagine 1.4TB won't take that long.

Unless you have thousands and thousands of small files, I can't imagine using netcat instead of rsync would be much faster. rsync definitely is better if you need to restart the process. I was just syncing about 9 TB of files to my odroid hc4 and rsync said the entire process averaged about 96MB/s.

If rsync works for you then go for it. this was a one-off.

Just a suggestion.. rsync has no setup and I use it for lots of one-offs.

  • The FreeNas I have is using ZFS file system and is from 2014. The PC is even older and I think it has 8gigs of RAM. I use it mainly for video and music storage for my Pi based media players. I'm usually the type" if it isn't broke don't fix it" kind of guy, but the system is old and the Freenas can't be upgraded, it requires a complete new install and I think a new install will wipe the data or is note going to read it. I remember having difficulty setting up FreeNas and also not having friendly support from their community. I like the look of OMV and if I choose to change the operating system I would go with OMV.

A month ago I deplatformed a 20TB RaidZ1. You don't have to delete data. Just export the Raid and then import into the new OMV system.

Of course it is recommended to have a backup, but this should always be a habit independent of the system you use.
