OMV 6: Error when installing openmediavault-zfs 6.0.5

Hi

I have a old HP motherboard with a I7 (gen4), 32Gbyte memory and a number of SSD's

- I downloaded OMV 6 (two days ago) flashed a USB stick and installed OMV on my computer.

- From a browser I selected "System-> Update management" and updated everything ( not everything wanted to be updated)

- Then I followed this instruction and installed OMV Extras ( OMV-Extras.org Plugin - Guides - openmediavault)

- Rebooted my computer.

- I went to "System->plugins" , selected : openmediavault-zfs 6.0.5 and installed.

Something goes wrong in this installation. Added transcript below

After this failure a dialog pops up at regular intervals saying

Code

500 - Internal Server Error
Failed to execute command 'export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LANG=C.UTF-8; zfs list -p -H -o name,mountpoint -t filesystem' with exit code '1':

So, what to do now. Is there a way to avoid/fix this error.

It would be easier to use the proxmox kernel but you need to remove the 5.14 kernel since it is failing to build (probably lack of headers).

I am not sure what you are proposing.

Is this plugin not a part of OVM and should be fixed if there is a bug?

The plugin is part of omv-extras. It is not a bug with the plugin. When using backports (enabled by default on OMV), Debian upgrades the major kernel version often. While your system is on 5.15, the 5.14 kernel has not been removed. Debian does not keep upgrading your kernel headers needed to compile the zfs module. So, if you do not want to install the proxmox kernel (installable by omv-extras kernel plugin) and you choose to keep backports enabled, then you will have to clean up your old kernels. There are many threads on this. This is just one of the drawbacks to using zfs on Debian. zfs is built into the proxmox kernel (slightly modified Ubuntu LTS kernel) and avoids this. I run the proxmox kernel on all of OMV amd64 systems.

What I propose:

uninstall zfs plugin

install proxmox kernel (from openmediavault-kernel plugin)

uninstall non-proxmox kernels (from openmediavault-kernel plugin)

install zfs plugin

Ahhhh.

I was to early with that statement.

I have this errror.

I tried to set up a Rsync task to fetch files from my old NAS

This isn't related to the kernel or zfs. Maybe something is configured wrong with your rsync task? What is the output: sudo omv-salt deploy run rsync

I'm also trying to get the zfs plugin to install.

I've followed your instructions and installed the proxmox kernel, however I don't see any way in the UI to removed the old kernels?

I'm attaching a screenshot of the kernel plugin.

Once the new kernel is installed do I uncheck the Backports option?

It's the same icon you used to install proxmox, there is an option to remove non-proxmox kernels

not very clear, best if option to remove have his own icon.

but my real question is: How can I revert to normal kernell ( not proxmox) once proxmox is installed.

case: I test plugin and install proxmox kernell, once tested for a month i want to rever to normal kernell, but do not find the option.

Well if you were only testing there would be no need to remove the other kernels, but even if you did, I know there are some on here that use the proxmox kernel even though they don't use zfs.

I use the Proxmox kernel on all x86 boxes regardless of whether I use zfs. I think it is more stable than backports Debian kernel.

I really didn't want to write something that would do all kinds of kernel things because most people would do something dumb with it.

You know how many times I pulled that menu done and apparently didn't actually read it!!!

ZFS installed without issue, imported my pool and I'm up and running on OMV6!
