rsync permissions on hidden files and chroot

  • Hi all,

I have a couple of OMV6 servers - prod and backup (both RPIs) with backup used as a vanilla OMV6 setup with rsync server running.

I have 'prod' setup with rsync remote/push tasks running on a schedule to 'backup' - all working fine (generally) but...

I sometimes get a permissions issue with hidden files (".") where rsync could not set time attributes. I fixed this by using root as the user on backup in the module doing the transfer.

rsync: [generator] failed to set times on ".": Operation not permitted (1)

But is there another way to fix this without using the root user solution?

Also, can someone explain what the chroot setting on the rsync server module is for (and if I should be using it)?

    Thanks for any help!

  • Zoki - Thanks. I see how much you are helping the community on these forums - much appreciated for sure.

I guess that if I am using root as user in the rsync module with chroot enabled and the sync jobs are all working well - I will leave everything as it is :)
