Is it possible to use HDDs over USB for RPI?

  • Hi All,

i am Planning to setup a NAS using OMV running on a Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) with 2 WD 3.5" Purple Surveillance HDDs on a USB 3.0 External Enclosure with Power.

I would like to know if it is possible to setup RAID using USB?

Would I be able to setup a SSD cache? Will there be any use for a cache in a OMV on RPi setup?

What are the expected speeds I can expect?

Any suggestions for a speed boost?

Not from the OMV web interface and with good reason. You should not use raid with USB.

You are using an RPi not a full fledge server. What are you hoping to accomplish? All of the drives would be sharing the usb bus and you only have a gigabit ethernet connection.

Not raid and not caching. What speeds are you getting now?
