Move external USB HDD to new OMV

  • I am looking at building a new OMV NAS for my home network. I am already somewhat familiar with OMV, I have a virtual running on ESXi for my lab. What I am wanting to do is build a new OMV using an external USB 3 to SATA enclosure and 2 4TB SATA drives configured RAID5 within OMV. Initially my plan is to build the OMV as a virtual on my ESXi host, but eventually I would like to build an OMV on a Raspberry Pi and move the USB 3 to SATA enclosure from the virtual OMV to the new one on the Pi. Is it possible to do that without loss of data?

OMV does not support RAID with USB connected devices. It is a bad idea and caused many issues in the past. People lost their data.

If the RAID is realised by the "sata enclosure" than it is fine for OMV as the raid is presented as one filesystem and OMV is not aware of the RAID.
