Strange problem to expand ZFS pool

  • Hello guyis, i am trying to expand my 4 disk zfs pool but when i select the fifth and i click on save it give my this error: "A raidz1 must contain at least 3 disk"..... is it a bug?

This i svery strange because first i click on add--->expand pool then after i select the fifth free disk that is the only one (rightly) available to select on expand pool screen, so i think there is a bug here....

Nope. Currently, you have expand your pool with a vdev that same as the existing one. So, you would have to expand it with four more disks. There is a change to zfs (not the plugin) in the works but not available yet.

  • Will this change you working on allow people to expand a pool with another single disk?

I think this is not the normal behavior of zfs ... e.g. truenas allows to expand/extend a 4 disk pool with just one disk or 2, in my case you telling me that I needs others 4 disk to expand/extend my 4 disk pool otherwise I could not do it any other way?

I'm not working on it. This is zfs development not the plugin. I only maintain the plugin.

I don't know anything about truenas but maybe it is using the development branch of zfs?? Maybe truenas is creating pairs of mirrors? Please read this - https://louwrentius.com/zfs-ra…f%20you%20run,vdevs%20can't%20be%20expanded. Single disk expansion isn't expected until Aug 2022.

n my case you telling me that I needs others 4 disk to expand/extend my 4 disk pool otherwise I could not do it any other way?

I'm just telling you what I know about zfs. Maybe it is wrong since I'm not a zfs expert. Feel free to research but the article I linked to seems to confirm what I was telling you.

  • @ryecoaaron i try again with truenas and.... yes, you are right, it has the same behavior as the zfs plugin in OMV

Now i have a big doubt, will i use mdadm or zfz for my NAS?

Will zfs implement the ability to add disks like mdadm already does?

ZFS is very greedy ... by the way have you tried to simulate a broken disk? When you reattach it, the pool will sync in 2 seconds ... OMG

Nope. I don't use raid anymore since there is no reason to. I did switch to zfs but only use single disk vdevs.
