Moving OMV to different hardware

Hi all,

I am currently running OMV 6 on a raspberry pi 3B+ and thinking about moving to a pi 4 in the future.

Currently I have been doing SD system backups with the dd approach, which has worked quite well, but I assume this would not work for moving my sd from a pi 3 to a pi4.

Is there a way to move my OMV configuration to a new hardware or would I have to do everything again by hand? (My configuration involves some created shares, the corresponding smb shares and general settings, like email, scheduled tasks, ...)

I would either move the rpi3 sd card to the rpi4 or clone it. Once it boots, run omv-firstaid to fix the networking. Everything else should just work.

ok, thanks a lot. I thought there would be more incompatibilities between the two devices, but if it's just this I will give it a try.

Nope. That is why the RPi foundation can release one image that works on everything. As long as your RPi3 image is up to date, you shouldn't have any problems.

Migrated yesterday from Pi3 to Pi4 and can confirm it worked as suggested. Just had to run omv-firstaid to fix the network. Everything else worked.

Had some other issues initially with the ssd getting unmounted sporadically, but it turned out, that is a well known issue with USB3 and the raspberry. After applying the necessary steps this also got fixed.

How about OMV running on a RaspberryPi 4 migration to RaspberryPi 5? Will it be similar or are there any significant hardware differences between pi4 and pi5?

The rpi4 image should work on rpi5 IF it is debian 12 bookworm/omv 7.x (earlier releases or Raspberry Pi OS won't support rpi5). You probably will have to run omv-firstaid on it using keyboard and monitor to fix networking. There are plenty of hardware differences but that won't be a problem.

I have tried just moving the SD card to the rpi5. It gives a boot error: rpi5 can't verify if the OS is compatible with 5 and that I can disable the OS check during boot time with os_check=0. When I do that it just hangs. I guess clean reinstall is the way to go in this situation.

I've spent a few minutes on this and I can't think of what title would be most meaningful for people to see, so if anyone has any ideas...

The only thing I can think of at this moment is to eliminate "backup" from the equation:

You can throw in "Migrate", "another instance" keywords... I think "Restore/Migrate" would improve searching...

I found this thread when I was looking for help with migrating my perfectly fine working OMV7 sandworm install from a RPI4-2GB to a RPI4-4GB. I thought it would be as easy as moving the SD card from one RPI to another. However, when I power up the new RPI4 with the existing SD card, it gets stuck somewhere during boot. I can only assume this, because I run the install headless and rely on a browser connection. No WiFi, only Ethernet. On the new RPI the LAN LEDs are only lighting up solid, which makes me believe there is no network activity (I cannot see the new one on my router either).

I have another SD card that contains a 'plain' debian install with pihole. There the swap between the 2 RPIs works fine.

Why am I having an issue with OMV and what can I do to fix it?

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need to run locally

omv-firstaid to configure the network card.

Thanks Soma. Dumb question, but how do I do that? I have always accessed the system via a network connection/browser, never locally. When I connected a monitor to the RPI for the first time earlier I had hoped it would light up and give me some clues. Maybe connect a keyboard next. Alas, the monitor stayed dark.
