couldn't install OMV in Raspberry Pi 3

    hi, yesterday i had to remove/uninstall OMV from Raspberry Pi (apt-get remove --autoremove openmediavault) because it had issues in logging in (former co-worker create and setup OMV in raspberry pi and didn't provide the user name and password for OMV), so I tried to reinstall OMV after I wrote the command;

    "pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade"


    then I proceed with install OMV in Raspberry, this is the output I received;

    It says right there why you can't install.


    Installing OMV on a system with a desktop is not supported nor recommended.

    i see. recently i just read a google docs documentation (installation of omv on raspberry pi), that was created by my former co-worker and it shows that she didn't face the issue that i'm facing now. here's the screenshot from her documentation.

    Honestly it couldn't have been that recent, as desktop installs have been deliberately blocked by the script for at least a year (maybe longer). This was done because of the problems that arose from installing OMV on top of Desktops.

    I see. So in order to reinstall the OMV, I need to use Lite version of the image? I couldn't find it in Raspberry pi imager

    Correct. There's also 64bit links depending on which pi 3 you have.

    Download Bullseye, and you'll get OMV 6 (current stable) or Buster, and you'll get OMV 5 (which is going EOL soon)

    I don't use Pi's, but I don't see why not. I know there's been posts recently about about the new PiOS (from reading here) that you need to make sure you set up a user and password, and then use that account (assuming it has sudo rights) to run the OMV script. I believe that is the jest of it... Soma is probably familiar with the issue.

    Pi 3 or Pi 4 should not make a difference. just use the Pi Imager to write the image onto a sd card and start from there.

    If you are concerned about the new way of creating a user, just name it pi and give it the password raspberry and you are back to what it was before.

    If using the latest official Raspberry imager v1.7.2, it's possible to select the latest lite 64bit.

    After selecting the sdcard to flash, and before clicking write, there's a dented wheel on the bottom right.

    Click it and some configurations can be done: setting the hostname, the user and password, local timezone and language, WiFi details if you use it.


    After setting all the above, write the image.


    That user will have SSH and sudo permissions

    So new to Raspberry Pi, not new to computing. OMV is exactly what I'm looking for, however it seems that the Pi I bought came with Desktop installed.

    I just downloaded "2022-04-04-raspios-bullseye-arm64.img.xz" and need to get it over to an SD card and then boot it up.


    My question is what do I lose? I bought a pre-built "Raspberry Pi 400 Computer Kit US Keyboard Layout" which seemed to make sense , one keyboard, power supply, monitor cable, ...


    Will I still have a desktop? My guess is no. I can ssh into the Pi as is. Will that capability persist? I have to start the ssh service from command line in order to get in. Just a console terminal?

    I never have touched a Pi 400, but installing the lite version of Raspbian will not give you much of an end user experience. No Desktop, not graphical programs, but only some console windows using ssh.


    What is the intended use for the Pi 400?

    That is the desktop version.

    You need the one that says lite http://downloads.raspberrypi.o…os_lite_arm64-2022-04-07/

    OK so I used the imager and burned the Lite 64 bit version (bullseye) on to a new SD card. The machine booted but I cannot ping anything on the network. My router does not see the device. I have hardwired an ethernet connection, that obviously worked on the previous version of sw. Does the network need to be started?

    Did you set a user when you used the imager?


    Or, if you have it plugged to a TV, run IP a and see what IP is on the eth0.
