Clone system SSD to a bigger SSD

    Hey guys. So, I have my 20GB system SSD, and I want to clone it to a bigger 120GB SSD. I have this external USB 3.0 SSD drive which I plan to take out of it's external case and use it in my OMV machine. What's the best approach to do this and to make OMV not notice I did anything at all? :)


    I use Clonezilla to make occasional backups of my system drive, but I don't know if Clonzilla makes a complete clone backup, since my system drive is around 16-17GB occupied, and the Clonezilla backup is around 4.5GB. I don't if Clonezilla uses some compression or something.

    well the easiest approach would be to try.

    Murphy's Rule: a backup never confirmed to restore correctly is worthless effort!

    Just use clonezilla to make a clone from the smaller drive to the larger one. I think there is an option to expand the partition to the compete drive. If not, you can use gparted to resize partition and filesystem.


    Clonazilla does a 1:1 clone. So OMV will not notice the difference. But note: you must not use both drives at the same time after cloning. Strange things can happen if you do.

    Can someone shed some light on new OMV 6 Extras Backup plugin. I have just configured it, did a manual backup and it created a following list of files:

    What is the process of recovering those back on a new drive? Documentation for OMV 6 Backup plugin is quite scarce.

    This isn't a new plugin. It has existed for a long time and there are guides and threads about it. Did you search?

    How to restore from an omv-backup?
    I'm preparing to upgrade to OMV 4 so I made a backup of OMV via the openmediavault-backup 3.11 plugin. If I need to do a restore, what is the process? I see the backup folder that was created but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it if I need to use it.

    The plugins I'm currently using are omvextrasorgs, omv-backup, snapraid, and union file system. Not sure if that has an impact or not.

    My hardware setup is

    - CPU x64
    - RAID6 with 7 disks (yes, I will change to snapraid)
    - SSD with operating system OMV4 connected to SATA port
    - backup flash USB option (if SSD does not work, I plug in usb and restart)
    - The BIOS boot order should be setup so that it boots firstly from the USB slot and secondly from the normal OMV disk. That way, if no USB is connected, the system will boot the normal operating system. But with USB connected it will boot the emergency option first. This comes in handy…
