OMV6 No Updates? Update Management returns nothing...

    • Official Post

This forum is the most cordial I have ever been in. Some answers may seem short at times. Heck look at my signature. It is not meant to be personal to anyone. Just a general statement. But it can be taken the wrong way. Please assume the best not the worst.

From the op "am trying to migrate to new server". Since it is not a common problem and not in production after a few suggestions it seemed easier to reinstall than fight it. If somebody comes up with a way to reproduce it maybe it could be fixed. Maybe apt install -f might fix it but who knows.

  • ~bpo11+1 are coming from backports so I think you have enabled that at some point. Here is what my system shows.

    Code
    root@omvad3:~# dpkg -l |grep rsyslog
ii rsyslog 8.2102.0-2+deb11u1 amd64 reliable system and kernel logging daemon

    root@omvad3:~# dpkg -l |grep libldap
    ii libldap-2.4-2:amd64 2.4.57+dfsg-3+deb11u1 amd64 OpenLDAP libraries
    root@omvad3:~#

So set the options you want and the apt clean all. Then if it comes back reinstall.

Looks like you were right. I did enable backports, not directly or intentionally, but by simply installing omv-extras which according to another post

enables backports repo with higher priority.

So is it a bad thing? Should I remove backports and the components that have been updated from there? I don't think I have anything that relies on anything specifically from the backport repo at least that I make use of. For now, I have unchecked backports, done apt clean, saw the latest update appear so I think I'm good.

Thanks for the responses and sorry for anyone who go frustrated by my questions ;)

No. omv-extras give you the ability to enable or disable backports but does not change the current setting. OMV itself enables backports by default when initially installed.

Just enabling backports means nothing. Unless that repo or individual packages are pinned higher than the regular repo, nothing from it will be installed. OMV only pins the kernel when backports are installed and omv-extras only pins zfs, borgbackup, and kvm packages. If something else (not OMV or omv-extras) pinned backports, you might get some updates from backports. Here is what I see with backports enabled (notice how the backports version will not be installed):

    aaron@omv6dev:~$ apt-cache policy rsyslog

  • OK, thanks.
I've only installed OMV, omv-extras and some plugins from there, but it seems like the kernel is pulled from backports. By default?

    Code
apt list | grep bpo | grep installed

    By default?

Yes. I'm not sure how the other three packages were installed from backports. Maybe it is like that on the newer ISOs. I don't have a VM around that was installed using the latest ISO. That said, I see very little reason to worry about it since they are just minor revisions away.

    aaron@omv6dev:~$ dpkg -l | grep -E "blue|e2fs"

ii bluez-firmware 1.2-4 all Firmware for Bluetooth devices

    ii e2fsprogs 1.46.2-2 amd64 ext2/ext3/ext4 file system utilities

When I get a chance, I will create a new OMV 6.x VM using the ISO to see what versions are installed.

The e2fs packages from backports are installed like that from the ISO when using 6.0.24 iso
