Increase OMV raid build speed

  • Morning all.

i'm upgrading my OMV setup to a Dell R510 server. i currently have 6 16TB drives and am trying to build a RAID 6.

it wants to take 10 days to build.

i'm trying to increase the speed below from 200000 to 500000. i've edited files in the system to force the build at those speeds. but OMV is keeping it slow.

any information or guidance would be helpfull.

  • OMV is keeping it slow.

OMV is not keeping it slow. The kernel is. Any mdadm speed tutorial on the internet can potentially help you.

  • i have followed them and there not helping.

You are using spinning disks. They don't have infinite bandwidth. I wouldn't expected to get a rebuild speed faster than one disk. So, 200 MB/s is about as fast as you will get.

  • i'm using 6 enterprise grade 16 tb drives.

    Seagate 16TB HDD Exos X16 7200 RPM 512e/4Kn SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch Enterprise Hard Drive.

    does that matter?

if not 10 days till i can use it :(

  • does that matter?

Nope. Still spinning disks. They have a lot of cache which doesn't help on raid rebuild. I would expect this to take a couple of days with that size of drive.

  • raid 10 would have assembled very quickly.

  • raid 10 i'd loosed a hole disk's worth of space. this is a upgrade for me. i need more space :)

i'm currently running 2 HELIOS 4 devices each with 6 6TB drives and there both reaching capacity.

going from 36TB to 48TB is only a small fix to my current issue.

i'll just wait the 11 days before i touch the server again. :(

  • It should speed up especially if you aren't using the server. I hope you didn't start creating a filesystem on it yet.
