Moving OMV to another PC and can't use Jellyfin anymore

  • Hi everyone,

Am hoping to get your help!

Originally I ran OMV with Jellyfin on an old Dell Precision T3500 computer; while this ran well, I wanted to install a GTX 1650 for hardware acceleration. Judging by how old the Precision was, I decided to move the HDD with movies and SSD with OMV to a PC that has a Intel i5 6th gen since it has less bottleneck with the GTX and has more RAM.

When I turned it on, I couldn't login to Jellyfin and had to plug a monitor to see what it was doing; it showed 'Precision login', which I'm guessing is the login I used previously. I don't remember the username and password and I'm not sure what to do now. Is there any other way around this? Normally I just turned on the Precision T3500 and it would boot Jellyfin and OMV automatically.

Strangely it's also not showing in my router!

Do I need to reinstall OMV again and redo all the hard work of getting my library up and running again? What did I do wrong?

So you can login to OMV and all the services are running?

Only Jellyfin is causing issues? How did you install Jellyfin? In docker? Is it running?

OMV is based on Debian. So search the web how to get access to a Debian server when you forgot the root password.

If you have access to the GUI of OMV, just create a user and add him to the ssh and sudo group. Then use this user to login.

A little planning before doing this probably would have saved you some hassle.

Most likely it's not picking up the network interface on the new machine (probably will need to run omv-firstaid if you can figure out how to log in)

You don't remember your root password? If you can't figure that out, you're going to need to boot recovery mode and change your root password, then log in, and run omv-firstaid which will hopefully get your network device working again.

Once that is done, you should have access back to the webUI and Jellyfin... I say *should* as sometimes just moving to new hardware like this isn't always quite that simple.

  • Hi everyone,

Sorry for the long overdue reply; life got in the way haha!

With the help with everyone's replies, how I managed to resolve this was reset my password similar to resetting your password through Debian, and once I did that, I used omv-firstaid to reset my network configuration. Hope this helps other people with a similar issue to mine.

Thanks for all your help! :)
