Openmediavault fails to boot, gets stuck at blinking cursor

  • I have had this problem happen twice now. I have a normally functioning server that has rebooted many times, and then I reboot it, and it never comes back. Instead of completely booting back up, it stops at a blinking cursor before it even loads GRUB or anything. It goes on indefinitely. In the BIOS, it appears that the UEFI boot device is not even there, even though the USB drive is visible. It's almost like its trying to boot in legacy mode off this UEFI drive. This is what happened a few days ago on the old and likely worn out stick drive, and ryecoaaron confirmed that the broken cpu temp plugin was not the problem. But now this is on a brand new stick drive, monitoring is not enabled, and the flashmemory plugin has been running the whole time.

I appreciate any guidance I am given, I'm at a loss here. Let me know if more information on what I have done to the server would be helpful.

  • Which motherboard do you have? Do you know how to access the BIOS of your computer?

The UEFI option can be enabled in the BIOS of the computer independed of the operation system, like OMV or linux or windows.

It is not working with both options UEFI or CSM, only with one.

  • Check boot order. In some cases you need to check also if BIOS is not trying to boot from other drive, like a member of RAID array. Some motherboards, like Asus had this funny settings that in one section there was FDD, HDD, LAN PXE etc, and another setting for hard disk priority, like WDxxxxx, ST300xxxx etc.

Sounds like a buggy bios. I have seen plenty of motherboards that don't reboot properly with Linux. All I can suggest is look on the internet for a workaround for ubuntu or debian kernels.

    It's so frustrating....

Are you rebooting a lot? I don't see how this is a major issue. What motherboard?

  • Are you rebooting a lot?

Not really. I rebooted a handful of time when I installed, and then probably twice after I ran updates.

As for motherboard- It is an HP Z820 Workstation, attached are pictures of the System Information tab in BIOS.

I haven't had time to reinstall yet, school is all-consuming right now. I miss my nextcloud and immich.
