Bottom line for my issue:
I created a salt file as a suggested workaround to create a second hosts file in the path. It never worked and I ultimately neglected to delete the file. Fast forward to today, the file broke the IPV6 reported state in the OMV network gui. I removed the added file, switched IPV6 to DHCP in the OMV gui and all is well with my settings now.
Thank you all for helping me figure out when and where I tripped over myself and caused my own failures, lol. You all rock!
How to enable IPv6 support on OMV6?

- OMV 6.x
- backslash

I know you don't like adding setting to the gui. But this thread would be 3 or 4 post long if it did have an "extra options" field. Adding to the /etc/hosts file is a somewhat frequent task. Searching the forum for "/etc/hosts" brought up 488 results.
Who knows how many people have ignored the warning in the hosts file and had to trouble shoot? At a minimum please include the proper way to do it in the comments of the hosts file. Maybe someone will read them. LOL
Thanks

OK, i looked through the first foudn issues but did not get an idea why it is necessary for users to add additional hosts? IMO this is not necessary to get a NAS running. If a pkugin does need that, then the plugin is responsible to add the entries. And if there really is a need for managing hosts entries, then a new plugin should do that, it's not part of the core because i do not see a need here.

I needed an entry while testing someones configuration. I didn't want to add a dns entry on my system. In a small network the user may not have access to add a dns entry. There are probably many other reasons to add an entry to the hosts file. The hosts file is a part of debian and is no longer working in OMV.
On another note. The entry will work until an update is applied. Then the change will disappear. The update will be blamed for breaking the connection. Even if it has nothing to do with networking.
Thanks
