Can I recover the files?

  • I thought I would take the USB drive from OMV, copy the files on the drive to my PC, and then move over to a new USB drive for OMV on my Raspberry pi4.

I could never see the files so I plugged the USB back into my pi.

Now OMV reads there is data there but I cannot "see" or access my files.

The drive was previously set up using OMV with shared folders, when I reattach it, the shared folder is still accessible on the network, but no files are showing. But in storage | File Systems it shows 5.57 GiB being used.

So my files are still there?

    Can I recover the files?

  • There are a few things you can try to recover the files. First, you can try using a data recovery tool to scan the USB drive and recover any lost or hidden files. You can check out software such as Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which are both user-friendly and free to download.

I'm going to assume that when you say OMV "reads" there is data there, but I cannot "see" or access my files, that you can't see your files in a network share.

What might have happened, when you connected the drive to the windows machines, is you might have done something to get Windows to take "ownership" of the drive. (Essentially, that would change permissions for the drive). You might have been prompted to do this.

You could try resetting permissions under:

    Storage, Shared Folders

Select on a Shared Folder and click on the top button that's labeled Access Control List.

(Do NOT check boxes at the top. If boxes are checked, uncheck them.)

Scroll down to the fields labeled Owner, Group, Others.

    Set as follows:

    Owner root Read/Write/Execute
    Group users Read/Write/Execute
    Others Read/Write/Execute

Check the boxes for Replace and Recursive

    Save the changes.

  • Thank you for responding.

When I click on Access Control List it throws an error.

ErrorFailed to execute command 'export PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin; export LANG=C.UTF-8; export LANGUAGE=; getfacl --no-effective --access -- '/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-3a7f87d5-8458-4f7c-bc61-dd922c94a9ae/piNAS/' 2>&1' with exit code '1': getfacl: /srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-3a7f87d5-8458-4f7c-bc61-dd922c94a9ae/piNAS/: No such file or directory

  • Update.

The shared folders from the bad drive are still showing on the network, there are no files in the folders and I cannot stop sharing. The drive is not plugged into the pi, I tried plugging it back in and then tried to stop sharing but no. I tried resetting permissions but I can't tell if anything changed. Everything is working fine with the internal 2nd drive I added to OMV, I would like to clean up and get the bad shared folders out, but for me, the easy way to do that is to wipe everything and start from scratch.

I do need to recover the files from the original drive if possible.

I tried Partition Recovery and File Undelete (cgsecurity.org) it ran forever and nothing...

    I will try another app.

While I understand that your wanting to try to recover your files, next time, consider -> backup. (Read over the backup section for the reasons why.)

Unfortunately, I can't recommend utilities or methods of recovering files from a dead or dying drive. With backup, I've never had a reason to try.

  • I have a double backup on my work files, these are mostly temp files, but thank you for your concern.

Right now I am trying to justify running a pi with OMV or just sharing a flash drive.
I replaced the drive with a 2GB and it's working great.

    but.

I cannot figure out how to remove the old share so I will probably wipe it all.

p.s. tenorshare-4ddig-for-windows was the only app that would let me "see" the files.

To remove the share, you to remove anything that is referencing the share.

For example; if you have a samba share, that attaches to a shared folder, you must delete the samba share before you'll be allowed to delete the shared folder.
