Can't access omv from Linux desktop (Unable to mount location)

  • One of my goals on the server is to keep things simple. The simpler the better. Jellyfin+Kodi gives you the advantage of both worlds very easily.

Jellyfin is not used as a player, but as a centralized database instead of ....other more complicated things.

Well, I have spent a lot of years, actually couple of decades, working/designing/configuring Borland, Paradox, MS Access and Oracle Databases so, for me simple MariaDB SQL database setup is trivial. Took me whole `5 minutes to set it up, but, as they say : everything is easy once you know it. I guess every one is going to use whatever is most convenient/comfortable to him/her.

Well, I became convinced after seeing the difference in CPU usage via WAN on my Pi4 (now a CM4), ;)

Some food for thoughts (see that post and the few next one's)

It takes a bit to create the users on Jellyfin (if you have a big crowd at home) and the profiles on Kodi to match those Jellyfin Users.

    But, it's worth the time.

At least, for my use case: watching the MEDIA via WAN (from one country to another) and the Pi4 not even breaking a sweat, :)

Of course, if what you have running, works for you, this is only for info, ;)

  • Soma, That is great if it works for you. My setup is as follow

NAS: B450-A Pro Max MB. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 cores 12 threads CPU OC to 4.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM. Dual port Intell 82576 chip NIC configured to bond0 LACP interface connected to Netgear gs308T managed switch. ATT 1GB UP/Down Fiber.

Streaming devices: Nvidia Shields Pro 2019 running Kodi, 5 seats. All Kodi installs are under NordVPN with NordLynx protocol connected to servers in Switzerland. I am in US.

Database: MariaDB in Docker Portainer on NAS (OMV6).

No need to setup multiple users. I can stream from NAS 3 different 4K movies on 3 Nvidia`s at the same time without performance degradation, buffering and/or lag.

Note: I did not tried 5 streams of diferent 4K movies/TV Shows at the same time, yet.

I tried Jellyfin on same setup and I had a lot of lag. It took around 5 seconds to load 4K movie on 1 (one) Nvidia. I did not even tried to test 3 simultaneous streams of 4K movies with Jellyfin.

I do not have nor use single board computers nor I do stream to Computer/laptop, so I cannot speak to that.

    So this is my experience.

This is starting to look like the contest: "Let's see who has the longest" :)

98% of users who use OMV as a multimedia server do so at home and with their family. It makes no sense to look for complicated solutions in front of simple solutions. Everything I know about OMV seeks simplicity, stability, security and the absence of problems. That's why I like OMV.

You don't need to become a database specialist to watch movies at home. OMV facilitates that.

1000000000% agree, OMV is simple, straight forward, great work horse NAS OS.. I love "KISS" projects, being retired product design mechanical engineer. I guess that in my old age I like to fall back to the things I know and familiar with.
