processor over use

  • Hello everybody

I have an issue with my server.

Everyday, every morning, I have an error with my server.

I read movie with vlc all night. But every morning, But every morning, vlc is stopped, I can no longer access any of my files in any way.

When I look at the procsser usage, the graph shows this:

    Capture-d-cran-2023-04-05-09-42-53.png

So it has a problematic process in the middle of the night.

How can you see which one is it and solve this problem?

    Thank you

    Approved the thread.
  • My hdd is connected to usb.

I think this is this message in syslog

    Code
    Apr 5 07:39:49 openmediavault monit[899]: 'openmediavault' loadavg (1min) of 8.0 matches resource limit [loadavg (1min) > 8.0]

This message is write in a loop

  • This sounds something like my problem. It sounds like the connection with the USB drive is lost.

Does the disk show up in the storage -> file system when this happens or disappears?

Does file transfer via SMB work or does the same thing happen? It looks like the HDD usb disconnects.

What Chipset doea USB enclosure has? Jmicron? ASM?

Type lsusb in terminal and copy info here.

  • I see a Jmicron hub and a VL813 hub in the list. Is more than one disk connected via usb?

Are you using Rpi or PC as server?

  • To be short and clear.

I have a suspicion that UAS inside linux is crashing the docking disk. - at least that's how it is with me and I've been struggling for days to discover the problem.

I blacklisted the UAS yesterday and have been testing all day so far everything is working fine! Maybe you have the same problem.

I read on some forum that USB 3.0 in Linux is total chaos and that external drives and hubs often have problems.

If you use an RPi, read this:

STICKY: If you have a Raspberry Pi 4 and are getting bad speeds transferring data to/from USB3.0 SSDs, read this - Raspberry Pi Forums

If you use a PC, then read these two things: - read this to understand what the problem is: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=245931

-implement blacklisting UAS in this way (because it differs from RPi):

    Disable UAS on for PC

Yesterday I did exactly that and everything is magically stable!

  • Ok thank’s!!!

I have a pc and yes a have a hub with 3 disk. So I’ll test Without the hub connected.

And after I’ll test with UAS blacklisting

  • Hello.

So I have test without my hub, with the UAS modification and with just one hdd connected.

    I always have the problem.

I search into syslog and I view this:

At 4 AM, I have the message who is in pdf

and after this, I have this message every 30 seconds:

    Quote

    openmediavault monit[3947]: 'openmediavault' loadavg (5min) of 4.1 matches resource limit [loadavg (5min) > 4.0]

And I must restart my computer to make it work again

  • Code
    [69968.727478] I/O error, dev sdb, sector 6587100624
    op 0x0:(READ) flags 0x80700 phys_seg 2 prio class 2
    Code
[70204.067625] INFO: task usb-storage:183 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

I think it is directly related to external storage. Disk or enclosure is failing or it has bad chipset/driver software for linux (you can test it on windows and it would work).

Run SMART test to see if disk fails or have bad sectors.

I'm having big problems with usb external HDD too.. Now I'm in search for ASM chipset enclosure to try.

But saw somewhere that external enclosures can randomly fail.

Can't help. All I can say is that usb 3.0 external storage on Linux is trash.

You can hear people saying that Debian an Linux are most robust systems..well yes but same time no.
