USB flash drive for a boot (or best storage strategy)

  • Hi,

I'm planning my first installation. For this, I am repurposing old i7-2600K and 16GB of RAM. I will have at the beginning 4x3TB drives, and later I will add 2-3 more. I want to use snapraid for extensibility. I may be moving disks from one server (unraid) to the second (omv) after first gets a larger drive upgrade. I also plan to docker a few applications and use a few apps to sync data between servers. I may sacrifice one SATA slot for SSD drive, but I prefer to use all of them for HDD. OMV machine will be placed in a remote location, acting also as a backup machine.

RE USB if I intend to use all SATA slots on my MB for data drives, thus I need to use USB flash drive as a boot (with flash drive plugin). I am looking for a recommendation. On my primary server running unraid I am using SanDisk Ultra Flair USB 3.0 for last 2 years without any issues, but unraid is using RAM primarily. For OMV I have these options to use any from these 3, but I'm not sure which one is compatible with static wear leveling.

    • SanDisk Ultra Flair USB 3.0
    • SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1
    • Samsung FIT Plus

Or shall I use USB SSD drive for boot and docker images and apps. TBH, I have no idea what would be the best approach.

    best,
