User with READ ONLY permission can delete files?

  • Hi! Noob here.

I am trying to set up NAS with multiple drives, but limited access to other users (family). I would like other users to have access to files with the ability to view, download, and upload files to a folder (drive). But I don't want users to have the ability to delete files from the folder. [It is a drive containing genealogy and family archive files, hence why I don't want accidental deletion.]

I set up a test drive (Temp_Test) and created a user (guest1). The Permissions are set as follows:

    • Storage/Shared Folders/Temp_Test/Permissions/User: guest1 = Read-only
    • Users/Users/guest1/Permissions/Temp_test = Read-only (all others = No access)

On another device (Win11), I mapped the Temp_test drive successfully with the guest1 user name & pwd. I was unable to access the other drives on the network. So I tested the Read/Write capabilities:

    • Able to Copy (download) file to a local folder: YES
    • Able to Upload a file to Temp_test folder: YES
    • Able to Delete file from Temp_test folder: YES

Why was this user able to delete a file when permissions are limited to Read-only? Am I missing a configuration setting?
