How many people are running the compose plugin on an i386 system?

    Using i386 and docker 14

    1. My system is amd64/arm64/armhf with docker (12) 86%
    2. My system is amd64/arm64/armhf without docker (2) 14%
    3. My system is i386 with docker (0) 0%
    4. My system is i386 without docker (0) 0%
    5. Something else. Post comment explaining. (0) 0%

Since docker doesn't support i386 and the version of docker/docker-compose in the debian repo is old, I would like to drop support for i386 in the compose plugin. Just taking a poll of how many people are using docker on i386. There aren't many docker images for i386 anyway.

This command will tell you if you are using i386: dpkg --print-architecture

    Added the Label OMV 6.x
  • Maybe you could change the "bullets" to:

    1. My system is amd64/arm64
    2. My system is i386/armhf with docker
    3. My system is i386/armhf without docker

This would simplify the answers, I think.

armhf is supported by docker currently. Only i386 is not. So, I only really want to know numbers for i386. but I guess I can change the text.

Sorry, I thought you also wanted to cover the fact that armhf is beeing deprecated on most images (mainly Linuxserver but that's what most use here).

I see that you're checking for 32Bit from docker itself.

Nope. That isn't a plugin problem. It is just the old docker and docker-compose version the Debian repos that i386 has to use.

  • How does the size types matter for compose ... is it YAML or debug related?

Size type? It is an architecture issue. Docker does not support i386 - there are no i386 packages in their repo. So, the plugin uses the debian version in the debian repo for i386. It is old and doesn't support some important features the plugin needs. And then there aren't many i386 images on docker hub either. i386 only chips are very old nowadays.

I know it isn't a lot of response but the fact that no one reported using i386 and that docker doesn't support i386, the 6.9.9 version of the compose plugin will be the last that supports i386. amd64, arm64, armhf will still be supported.

  • Although debian still supports i386, the Pentium 4 processor is the last generation of processor that only supports i386. It is too old and runs very slowly. It is really painful to run docker on such a slow platform.

Life is a boring and troublesome thing, it is annoying and stupid.

  • It is too old and runs very slowly.

Sure, but a lot of things will still run in real time. In fact, everything I run on OMV might run identically. Of course I can also see how using smaller types would be beneficial for things like SBC's with low memory. However, given that "enterprise" hardware switched to 64-bit long, long ago, I can see why Docker can't be bothered with 32-bit.

There is nothing stopping the user from using the older version of the plugin because it will stay in the repo. It just won't be getting any changes from here on out.
