Newbie cant find NAS ip address(ipv6 issue?)

  • Newbie on NAS, age 80, lots of experience(paid in college as scientific programmer in 1963) decided to take old pretty good old PC 9900k, and make it NAS as W11 networking now PIA.

Has 4 old 2T drives as a raid 10 system.

Saw in You tube video that OMV sometimes defaults to ipv6. Running on Xfinity 1Gb internet.

Finished install and ran ip addr and got 127.0.0.1 as ip? Can ping 127.0.0.1 from laptop.

Cant log into console. Also from NAS cant ping my W11 laptop used to setup which is 10.0.0.33

Running 'Adv IP' on laptop showed 10.0.0.1 active.

When I try to ping laptop from NAS get msg 'network is unreachable.'

Only sketchy use of Unix 30 years ago means I am pretty weak in that area.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Already had downloaded and read it -thanks.

Also aware of 127.0.0.1 and why I put ? after it but that is what I see on running ip addr and have found no other ip4 addresses from ip addr command.

I am sitting with root@openmediavault: # prompt. Any other way to get ip address from here? TAgain not very Linux schooled. The documentation says ip presented to you before login prompt after a reboot but did not see that.

Adv IP scan on my W11 laptop doesnt show server which is kind of strange if it got an ip from the Xfinity box. Could fool around with router to see what is happening there.

Maybe try a reload from usb drive, cant hurt!

Can you ping google? The command below will ping google.com 5 times. Does it show it successfully pinged Google or an error? Obviously this is done from the server.

    Code
    ping -c5 google.com

tried pinging google as suggested, got msg 'name or service not known'

Sounds like your network device was not detected correctly and/or you have a DNS issue. Since you say you're not getting an IP address at all, I doubt it's a DNS issue at this point. Were you attached to the Internet during Install?

If you type this as root

    omv-firstaid

The first option is configure network device. Choose that, then your network device, and just use IPV4/DHCP (I usually disable ipv6 just to avoid conflicts) and let the router assign your server an IP address.

    Once it's done,

    ip -a

And that should show your IP address. Go to it and log in to the webUI with admin/openmediavault. Once you can log in to the webUI, setting a static IP is easy.
