No HDD Spin down anymore Seagate Exos

  • Hello everyone,

first of all, I will be happy for anything new I can try. So any suggestions are welcome. I have two HDD's in my NAS. Both are Seagate Exos drive one X16 and one X18. I installed omv and configured the hdd with the seagate seacheast tool. The hdd spin down worked at this time as expected.

I had to reinstall omv and reset the bios for some reasons (not important here). I configured omv and copied all my data from my old nas. And now I couldn't get the spin down to work again. I used btrace to find any activity but there is nothing on the hdd's. When I send the drives manuel via the seacheast tool to standby using PowerControl --transitionPower standby_z they spin down and stay down until I do something on the drives. But automatically it doesn't work. What I tried:

    • turn off/on the hdparm spin down in omw (was off in the first install)
    • use powertop --auto-tune and also reset all settings powertop did
    • set the exact same bios settings as before (my bios got profil backups)
    • CMOS reset of the bios
    • Tried ubuntu live distro
    • rewrite the EPC settings to the drives, change the EPC settings to low numbers using the seacheast tool
    • turn off / on the EPCfeature using the seacheast tool
    • different kernels

Does anybody have any idea what else I can try?

    Approved the thread.
  • maybe this guide will help:

    omv 6.9.8-1 (Shaitan) | 64 bit | Linux 6.1.0-0.deb11.11-amd64

    plugins: compose 6.11.3 | cputemp 6.1.3 | sharerootfs 6.0.3-1 | omvextrasorg 6.3.1 | resetperms 6.0.3 | symlinks 6.0.4 | wireguard 6.3.7

  • Thank you for the suggestion. I will try that!

The strange thing is that it worked before. I don't know what happend. Today I even tried a different mainboard with ubuntu live distro and windows. Exact same behaviour so I think it must be releated to the firmware of the drives. If I find any further information to this I will update the post here.
