You only need a password to access the remote server. To access the local server you do not need a password.
Depending on whether the task is in push mode or pull mode, the remote server will be the source or destination.

why couldn't rsync do this with its optional parameters?
Wouldn't it have been easier to insert a password field for the source too?

The Rsync feature in OMV is not designed for that, it only supports local <-> remote. Remote <-> Remote does not make sense on a NAS. You can also do that from your local host system. It's not necessary to use OMV for that because it is not involved as source or destination in that case.
Alternativelly you can use scheduled tasks and configure the rsync command manually.
