Setting up Home Network with multiple routers and OMV NAS with automation and remote access planned

  • like Tailscale.

I haven't had the "pleasure" of working with CGNAT yet so how does it work when you use Tailscale but want to watch a movie? Is _ALL_ data passed through the VPN/Tailscale or does Tailscale connect the request directly to the client in a P2P fashion? I couldn't imagine trying to watch a 4K movie or view multiple 1080p cameras via remote when all data is passed through a _FREE_ VPN... seems iffy.

Fortunately I've never been forced to use Tailscale, so I can't answer you. I have always been able to get rid of CGNAT. I only know that Tailscale is a possible solution from comments from some forum users. Personally I think it is a bad solution, but I suppose there will be people who will have no choice but to use solutions of this type.

  • Hey folks,

Big thanks for continuing to help me navigate through this CGNAT maze. It’s been a journey, to say the least! :D

Tailscale sounds like a nifty tool from what you guys described. I’m all for giving it a go, especially if it’s going to be my bridge over troubled waters (aka the CGNAT dilemma). The setup seems straightforward which is a relief for a not-so-tech-savvy soul like me.

I checked out their website and the free tier seems like a good starting point. Plus, it works on different devices, which is awesome given the mini-jungle of gadgets I’ve got.

I did read about the peer-to-peer connectivity which sounds cool, though it’s mostly Greek to me. I’m crossing my fingers it does the trick with the CGNAT wall I’ve hit. :S

Streaming is my end game here, so I’m hoping it holds up well. I’m kinda excited to test the waters and see how it works with my setup.

The support from the community and the guides are reassuring. It’s like having a safety net as I trapeze through all these network configurations.

I’ll be giving Tailscale a try and will definitely share how it pans out. Fingers crossed, and hey, if I stumble, at least I’ll have learned something new, right? :whistling:

Massive appreciation for all the advice and patience. You guys are stars!

    Cheers,

  • Hey everyone,

I wanted to give you all an update on my journey with Tailscale and my adventures in overcoming the CGNAT hurdle. First off, a massive thank you to this incredible community for pointing me towards Tailscale. It's been an absolute game changer!

After some research and encouragement from you all, I decided to dive into Tailscale, starting with their free tier. The setup was surprisingly straightforward, which is a big plus for someone who isn't a networking guru. I've installed Tailscale on my OMV server, my phone, and a desktop PC. The remote access is up and running, and I must say, it's working like a charm!

I've taken some additional steps to secure my setup. I set up usernames and passwords for services like Radarr, qBittorrent, and SABnzbd. I also went ahead and created a second instance of Heimdall for a remote dashboard, tailored specifically for this new remote access setup.

In a pleasant surprise twist, I managed to get remote access to my Plex server working perfectly. After enabling port forwarding on my router and remote access on Plex, it’s accessible via the Plex app – despite the fact that the port doesn’t appear open when checked on sites like canyouseeme.org. It seems like Plex has some magic under the hood that works well even under CGNAT constraints.

The best part? I don’t need to route video streaming through Tailscale, just server management, which was exactly what I was hoping for.

To sum it up, Tailscale has opened up new avenues for managing my OMV server remotely, and it's working flawlessly so far. The guidance and support from all of you have been invaluable, and I can't thank you enough for your patience and advice.

If anyone’s on the fence about trying Tailscale to circumvent CGNAT issues, I’d say give it a go. It’s been a worthwhile venture, and I've definitely learned a lot along the way.

Once again, thank you all! You've been amazing!

    Cheers,

I'm glad you solved it. I just want to add for anyone reading this that Tailscale, in my opinion, is the last resort. The first way should always be to get rid of CGNAT and avoid solutions like this that force your traffic to go through other people's servers.

To sum it up, Tailscale has opened up new avenues for managing my OMV server remotely, and it's working flawlessly so far.

Make sure you have adequate security measures for remote access to your server. Unfortunately we have already seen several cases in the forum about hacking due to lack of security measures.
