Why I chose an N100 over a Raspberry PI5

As I'm tired about synology dependancy, i'm building like you a NAS using the Intel n100

Some little questions if you can give me some advices :

1- you preconize the miniPCIe 3.0 x2 6-port SATA adapter with Asmedia 1166 chip, is it something like that :https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0BWYXLNFT means we can place it on the Slot M.2 (M Key) ?

So what can be placed on the slot M.2 (E Key) ? Never found any connector...

2- I'm a little scared with your comment "The current OMV6 ISO is not capable of starting the installation, it hangs on the startup screen, so OMV can only be installed by installing Debian 11 and then OMV6 using the installation script"
Have you tested with the current beta OMV7 iso ? I don't want an overlay with Debian installation or proxmox

3- A little tips for the RAM. Yes we are limited to 16 Go but it's confirmed now 32 Go can be implemented :

The ref is Crucial RAM CT32G4SFD832A 32Go DDR4 3200MHz CL22 I think

4- For now i'm going with this config (looks like your ;o)
- RAM : Crucial RAM CT32G4SFD832A 32Go DDR4 3200MHz CL22
- PCIe to SATA adapter :Carte M.2 NVME SATA 3.0 6 ports

- Asus PRIME N100I-D D4 motherboard with integrated low-power N100 processor (because I prefer to mange with ATX Power supply
- Power supply : be quiet! System Power 10 450W (less noise than sfx 300w)
- mini itx box : Fractal Design NODE 304 (permit to mange atx power supply + mini itx cards)
My main installation will OMV with docker containers (home assistant, jellyfin...)

Interesting thread. Just been reading about the N100 I see it only has one memory channel so HW transcoding by QSV on Jellyfin or similar will be less than what you could achieve with dual channel memory. My system specs are below, when I added a second DIMM the QSV transcoding went from 120 fps to 250 fps approx. Not a big deal unless you have several simultaneous streams running. What fps do you get using Jellyfin to play an HEVC file on a device that needs the file to be transcoded? It should be much the same as I get I expect?

Yes often do the same but my daughter uses Android app - the Jellyfin server admin page reports any transcoding info as I'm sure you're aware.

Do you know if there is Hard Disks size limitation with Asus PRIME N100I-D D4 motherboard or miniPCIe 3.0 x2 6-port SATA adapter with Asmedia 1166 chip ?
Just wonder if for exemple an ironwolf 12To will be recognize from my hardware and Debian/OMV...
Sometimes i've read in Amazon some OS/hardware not reconize Hard Disks with high disk space...

I have buy this configuration.
Unfortunetly I have buy a Sata controller on M2 port with JMB575 chip and it's not recognized. (https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0BVMBDG4B)

After a lot of search I don't know if I buy the same M2 card with ASM1166 controller (will I have errors disk ?)
or I refund everything and take an Asrock n100m (Mini-ATX :s) to get a PCI-E X16 and LSI HBA SAS controller (But most expensive and more consumption)

Nice read, I was thinking about these processors as well. Also, the AMD embedded chips which offers more cores and better GPU performance BUUUUT, That does not matter when AMD is problematic when trying to pass through there iGPU. Intel No issues and the virtualization seems easier on any intel machine than AMD (INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS). I have my personal machines all running either ARM CPU or a Energy Efficient X86. All have pros and cons, now my current server is running a i7-6700 with a WX3200 and it does everything beautifully, gaming remotely and at the station work flawlessly. I digress, everyone's usage is different, I am now changing the system out for a Dell Workstation 3210 workstation with the E5-2690 V2 Intel chip. WHY? Cores and more performance. Sure I could have built a new PC but this system is costing $200 with 32GB ram and a 250GB SSD. Again everyone's usage is different. My goal is to have 2 in 1 machines running with everyone remoting to a Virtual Machine as their desktop. If it is a Chromebook they can use windows apps, Linux app you want to use? Load up Debian and a way you go. Also this upgrades everyone equally and if someone needs more power, well lets allocate that for you. Until the prices come down on the Ampere chips and equivalent (as well as maturing software) I think taking one of these machines and using it as the power machines does more, it saves it from ewaste which is a bigger problem than using under powered machines for servers. Tinkering is great on the PI and mini PC's. Eventually I have found out that you hit a wall and need more of something. That is what led me to this machine after 6 years of low powered machines. Hit a wall and need an upgrade! If you made it this far apologizes just wanted throw in my thoughts!

I have no bias either way. I am amused they preloaded the bias in their headline (scrawny intel CPU) only to give a grudging nod to the N100 for all the connectivity at the end. I'm a fan of any micro PC in general. Been following your adventure.
