Create home dir for existing user that already has an home dir in root

  • Hi,

in the past i added a home dir for my user with the command mkhomedir_helper .

If i enable home dir for users in OMV in a share folder now, how can i do it properly in order to not create trouble? In this case the home dir already exists as said above and already contains files for an existing user.

    Thanks!

I don't understand what you are trying to do. Are you asking how to make the user use the new home directory location if a user already has a home directory created and you enable home directories in the OMV web interface?

    Hi,

i actually have home dir for my user, created on the sd card with the mkhomedir_helper command.

If want to stop using that and instead create a home dir for my user "the OMV way" so creating a share folder for that, what is the correct procedure apart from selecting the share folder etc? The data actually in my home dir will be migrated automatically? i'll need to edit some file to point to the new home dir? Hope it's more clear now.

Once you enable home directories in OMV, creating a new user will automatically create the home directory.

No. Enabling home directories in OMV will not migrate existing users.

If you want to change a user's home directory, you can use usermod
    usermod -d /path/to/new/home USERNAME

if you want that command to move the files in the old home directory just add the -m flag.
