Successful Migration from OMV 6 to OMV7

  • hi, I want to upgrade OMV from 6 to 7.

I've Rpi4 with Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye (Debian 11). Are these upgrade steps correct?

    1. upgrade OS to 12 - Bookworm

    2. upgrade OMV via sudo omv-release-upgrade

Will this approach work? I have some docker's containers running, but nothing else special.

My biggest fear is losing my SNAPRAID/MERGEFS setup and pool.

Anyone running these have any problems and/or success?

They typically upgrade just fine. But they are on top of other filesystems. If you just take a screenshot, you can recreate them with no problems if something does happen during the upgrade. You won't lose data if your mergerfs pool gets deleted.

What data do you recommend I capture in the screenshot, just in case?

Whatever you need to recreate the mergerfs and snapraid config. Just the main datatable of each plugin isn't enough. You might have to edit each item in the list and take a screenshot of those if you can't remember the settings.

  • In my case, it was a catastrophe (one of my units appeared as "missing" and I had tons of error if I tried to mount it). Only these commands fixed the mess:

    Code
    sudo omv-env set OMV_APT_USE_OS_SECURITY false
    sudo omv-salt stage run prepare
    sudo omv-salt deploy run apt
    sudo omv-aptclean

What error were you getting that made you disable the security repo?

  • Hi all.

Decided to migrate my home box from OMV6 to OMV7. Worked like a charm.

The only "surprise" was that the mdadm is now a plugin. Installed OK.

Thanks to everyone contributed to this project. Great job!

  • Hello,

I just took the plunge from OMV6 to OMV7. Perfect! No issues. Had to install a -md plugin for my RAID to work, but the install process stopped and told me that. All my docker containers were there with my apparent changes. This was super easy! Thanks to all the developers. Awesome job!!!

  • Hi, quick question: will the upgrade in place from OMV6-7 also upgrade the system from Armbian Bullseye to Bookworm?

Not sure how I should tackle this but have seen no ref to the underlying OS

    Thanks in advance

Yes. It has to. omv-release-upgrade has always upgrade OMV and the OS.

Not sure of your question or if you had one but your kernels make sense. Before is the 6.1 backports kernel on Debian 10 and after is the 6.1 regular kernel on Debian 11. The backports version of the previous release is almost always the same as the regular kernel on the current release.

  • So should I install never kernel ?

Is the plugin openmediavault-kernel 7.1.1 right plugin to install to upversion the kernel?
Why other people reporting the updates did have different kernel versions (like 6.3 before update and 6.4 afterwards) ?
I didn't see any other kernel possible to install than 6.1 and now 7.1

    Thanks
