MiniDLNA Not Visible on Network

  • Hi All,

First post here, so I hope I don't miss any info:

    Issue Description:

New OMV install this morning that has worked well, and I have SMB shares up and running with access across a network that my Win 11 laptop can see and use. So far so good.

So, I thought I would add MiniDLNA. The service installed fine, is showing as running, and I have added shared folders to it. However, when I look for the share in the Windows Media Player the library isn't appearing. I cannot see it on a TV or via a Blue Ray player, either, which I use successfully for other media servers that I have (they are not on while I try this, by the way).

Sorry for reaching out as I am normally quite good at working these things out on my own, but this just seems to be a bit of a strange one as I have installed this before on another RPi4 and it worked without any issues. Any help would be really appreciated.

    System Info:

    Computer: Raspberry Pi4 with 4GB

Installation OS: Headless Debian 64bit (updates and upgrades applied at time of install)

    Kernel: Linux 6.1.0-rpi7-rpi-v8

    Boot Partition: 16GB SD Card

Shared HD: 1TB external USB 3

FS: NTFS, already formatted and with an existing MP3 library on it

    OMV Version: 7.0-23 (Sandworm)

    Diagnostic Steps Tried:

    1. Checked all the shares were accessible from a Win 11 laptop in case of a file permission error.

    2. Uninstalled the MiniDLNA service and reinstalled. Rebooted the server after each major change (just in case!)

    3. Checked that the service was running by using the dashboard Services widget. It is.

    4. Checked the MiniDLNA web service and it is showing as running with files available and in the library (10k files available).

    5. Server and end user devices are all on the same class C network.

    Approved the thread.
  • Not got any replies, so wonder if that means no one knows what I might try?

Just to add, I started a fresh install using an 8GB Pi5. As before, it loads SMB/CIFS and I can see and access the OMV server file shares on the network. Installed MiniDLNA again, set the shares to the NTFS folder with the music files in it, checked the service is running on the MiniDLNA webpage, which it is, but still not seeing the media server device on the network. The Pi5 is is cabled to the router, and the TV/Laptop/Blueray are on WiFi. All are on the same Class C network, though, and there's no firewall setup to block traffic.

    What am I doing wrong?

I would try to do the same with a data drive formatted with a native linux file system. This way you will be able to rule out errors derived from using a Windows file system, which generally cause unexpected errors.

As a general rule you should use native Linux file systems to configure data folders on OMV (or any Linux system).

  • I have a similar issue with my MiniDLNA to this day. In order to see the library I have to go to Services > MiniDLNA > Setting then click on Rescan each and every time I reboot or shutdown the OMV6 server (not sure and don't know why) . I don't know if you try this but this is what I did and it works every time. I am new and still learning

BTW, I remember I read somewhere saying that Linux and Unix don't like NTFS at all. Just a thought

    Good luck
