OMV stopped working - no web gui and illegal instruction error when running engined

  • Open Media Vault has been running for a long time. Rebooted the machine because I couldn't access the web gui and the machine didn't come back. Found it sitting on an initramfs boot screen with an fsck error. Manually ran the fsck and the system booted. When it came up web gui would not work - it displayed but I could not do anything - trying to log in gave me a spinning circle which eventually errored out.

Doing some investigation I found that the engined service is not running.

    When I try to run omv-engined -d -f I get "Illegal Instruction"

I read something about php5 but I think that was related to a Pi. This is running on a Proliant Gen 9 file server.

Tried first-aid clearing cache and no change.

    Any help appreciated very much!

You need to give us more info. We don't even know what version of OMV you are running. What type of media is the OS installed on? The fact that you had to reboot because the OMV web interface wasn't working makes me think the disk that the OS is installed on is failing.

  • It's running on flash media - the version is 5.something. Not sure how to tell from the cli what omv version it is.

I forgot to mention I did try to do the reinstall as well and that failed with the same error. The flash media is not that old - maybe a year or so and the flash plugin is installed so the wear should be less.

    dpkg -l | grep openme

The flashmemory plugin doesn't protect against all writes. It is possible it is starting to fail. Reinstalling will only make failing media worse.

  • DistroWatch has this release, with pictures of a GUI in the description. So I looked you up and found the youtube channel, watched one video about RAID management and I was hooked. :)

I gotta say, if I get a chance to point n click a RAID together, it will be a dream come true. :)

  • Here is the output of the dpkg command:

    Code

Is there any way to verify if the flash media is failing?

Version 6.5.0 was the same, no GUI, downloaded from here: https://www.openmediavault.org/download.html

Where do I get the version with a GUI?

I don't have time to get into this. But you have a lot of reading to do. OMV id managed by a web UI, not a desktop, via another client on your network. This is for all versions of OMV

You are working with version OMV5 that has long been discontinued. Please reinstall with OMV7.

Not anything worth the time. If there is any weird behavior like you are seeing, I would replace it. Flash can fail in many different ways. Sometimes it is gradual. Other times, it is instant.
