KVM Plugin VM, add com3 port to Win7 vm

  • Hello experts,

    How do I add a com port (COM3) to a windows 7 vm in the OMV KVM Plugin?

    The project overview is connecting a solar inverter to PVOutput.org.

    Steps;

    Inverter RS 232 port ->

    RS232 to USB adapter cable ->

    USB plugged into usb port on the OMV server ->

    pass through OMV server usb port to win7 vm COM3 ->

    run software, PV Bean Counter, outputting data logs to PVOutput.

    Final step, figure out things I haven't thought of yet!

    You can change the com port number in windows.

    Is that all that is required to redirect a omv server's usb port to a win7 vm?

    Is it really that simple?

    You have to passthrough the usb to serial adapter to the VM (it seems you were doing that). Windows should recognize it as a com port and assign a number. If that number is wrong, you can edit the com number in the device properties in Windows.

  • Thanks for the answer about changing com port numbers in windows.

    I better rephrase my original question.

    How do I pass-through the omv server's usb port to the win7 vm com3 ?

    Is there anything required in the win7 vm configuration?

    How do I pass-through the omv server's usb port to the win7 vm com3 ?

    A usb port can't be a com port. So, you can either passthrough the device that provides the serial port OR you can passthrough the usb controller. But there is typically more than one usb port on a controller. Passing through the controller will break something if the host is using a device plugged into the passthrough controller.

    If you passthrough the usb to serial device using usb passthrough, the win vm will see it as a usb device and need drivers for it (most likely). once it has drivers installed, you should see the com port. If it isn't com3, then you can change the number.

    Is there anything required in the win7 vm configuration?

    Yes. You either have to use the usb passthrough menu to passthrough the adapter or the pci passthrough menu to passthrough the usb controller.
