[OMVFox.fritz.box] Panic or segfault in Samba - being spamed with e-mail alerts!!

  • Even on newstart - samba turned off, the samba service goes into a loop and sends me constantly e-mail alerts with different PIDs - I get an e-mail per second:

"The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,

was called for PID 6930 ().

This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.

However, the executable could not be found for process 6930.

It may have died unexpectedly, or you may not have permission to debug

    the process."

    Something is big-time broke =O

Even with samba shut down it still sends these panic messages!!!!

    root@omvfox:/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-9ce30a5a-80c0-40ef-9fee-1c8608334b5a/Home/rfox# service smb status

    ○ smbd.service - Samba SMB Daemon

Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/smbd.service; disabled; preset: enabled)

    Active: inactive (dead)

    Docs: man:smbd(8)

    man:samba(7)

    man:smb.conf(5)

  • This has occurred again - and even after I turn off notifications, the system keeps spamming my e-mail! Every second I get an e-mail - so many hundreds so far! This is NOT good!!

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,

was called for PID 598604 ().

This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.

However, the executable could not be found for process 598604.

It may have died unexpectedly, or you may not have permission to debug

    the process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't see any errors. Any errors in the syslog viewer in the web interface?

Do you always have debug logging enabled?

  • BTW - this always gets triggered when I access the OMV instance from a MAC (OSX latest version) - not from Linux or Windows PCs

  • Not sure what you mean in "extra options" ?!? I have not changed anything in the SMB service - only updates over time (went from OMV6 to 7 when 7 was released) - and perform regular updates when available . . .

Not sure what you mean in "extra options" ?!?

On the SMB/CIFS Settings tab, there is a box called "Extra options". Do you have anything in it?

For each SMB/CIFS share, there is a box called "Extra options". Do you have anything in those?

Try to remember that I can't see your system, so I don't know how it is configured.

I'm out of ideas and I don't have a running macos system. Maybe try turning off options in the shares like recycling to see if you still have the problem. I would not leave debug enabled. It isn't needed when the problem is a segfault.

  • Is there NO indication why the Panic Action script gets triggered and fires off an alert e-mail every second?? Even when I turn off notifications I was getting e-mails ?!? Well that's a shame. After some research, I have seen other have been affected by this as well . . .

The panic action is triggered because samba looks to be segfaulting. This is likely a samba issue with an option. That is why I suggested playing with the options to see if you can figure out which one is doing it. I don't know what else to tell you.

    Try at the cli. testparm

It might show some error in the smb.conf file.

The saltstack runs that. The segfault only seems to happen when a mac client hits a smb share.
