Sometimes, while the system is running normally, I receive this email

This triggered the monitoring system to: restart

And the shared folder stops working.

It is sufficient a reboot to make the system work again.

Any ideas why this happens and how to fix it?

Could it be a power-related issue? Note that the HDD connected directly to the raspberry pi and not through a power supply.

Yeah. That is a very common reason. Generally a Raspberry should be able to directly power a single hard drive.

Lots of USB drives will go to sleep and this can cause a disconnect.

Thank you for the replies. My raspberry pi only has 1 hard drive connected so I thought it could handle it.

Will a powered usb hub solve the issue? Or perhaps an SSD?

That might help if that hard drive has special power requirements. But if the problem is related to the power management of the USB-SATA adapter of that hard drive as ryecoaaron said, it is a different case. In that case you should consult the manufacturer's documentation and find out if you can configure that power management manually. Unfortunately, most hard drives with a USB adapter are designed for Windows, so you will probably have to manage it from there.

If the USB-SATA adapter is the same, the problem could repeat itself. As for the energy required by that SSD hard drive, it will surely be less than that of a mechanical drive.

Many 2.5-inch hard drives with enclosures, such as Toshiba Canvio Basic, go into hibernation mode after a certain period of inactivity. This is implemented in the firmware of the controller of these hard drives. These plates have difficulty waking up when requested by the Raspi. A script that keeps the disks awake helps. Of course, this is at the expense of electricity consumption. As for the power supply... it is important to use the original RaspberryPi power supply. This is usually enough for a disk on the USB3 and an SDCard. Never use any chargers or power adapters from other vendors. The Raspi 4 needs the original power supply with 15.3 watts. The Raspi5 does that with 27 watts.

Yes I am using the original power supply.

Otherwise I will try with an SSD and see if this solves the issue.

All external HDDs have a USB-to-SATA adapter.

Aren't you plugin the drive with a USB cable to the Pi?
