OMV6 Data drive backup - need information/help

    I know that this topic has already been discussed several times. But I can't really figure it out.


    I would like to back up my two data hard disks (RAID 1) to a 3TB NAS hard disk or make a backup of the data.


    I think that I have to mount the third hard disk, which serves as a backup, in OMV beforehand. Can I then format the disk and use it as a backup disk? Does it make sense to format the disk in the same file format (e.g. EXT4)?


    What is the best method? What do I need to bear in mind?

    You would have to first wipe the 3TB disk. All data will be lost. Then you need to create a filesystem on it. Then you can mount the filesystem and use it for your backup.


    You can use the same filesystem. Especially if both are ext4.


    Best method? Depends on your needs.

    Search about rsync, rsnapshot, bogbackup.

    Duplicati does deduplication and compression while doing a backup.

    For versioned backup you can use rsnapshot (available as plugin)
    For a simple 1:1 backup you can use rsync (available as plugin)
    For remote backup (encrypted, versioned, compressed and deduplicated) you can use Duplicati or restic/rclone
    For a local encrypted, versioned, compressed and deduplicated backup you can use Restic or Borgbackup (available as plugin)
