new installation, creating a new share accessable by windows AND linux

I'm going to be installing a new instance hopefully over the weekend but I wanted to see what my options will be. my old (what I'm using now) is really for the windows machines currently there are linux and windows machines on my network. since msft is becoming such a pain on os/hw I may wind up changing some boxes over to linux. the issue is going to be I want to share files to both systems. I get the difference between ext4 and ntfs but I'm looking to simplify my life somewhat. I'm looking for some type of config that will allow both to connect to the same files. is that truly an options under this software?
