NAS Build with 6x HDD 4x SSD and sfp+

  • Hi everyone,, at the moment I am searching for hardware for my new Nas. I have 2 qnaps what I want to get rid of and use omv instead. I want to have 2 ssds for os, 2 SSDs for cache or tier and 6 HDD for data. Additional I want to have 10gbe via sfp +. My goal is to do this as power efficienced as possible. At the moment I Stück with the Mainboard / cpu combination. A n100 has good tpu but to less pcie Lanes. So may someone how is more into hardware can help me in this case?

    Thanks in advance

    Matze

What models? Some QNAPs are suitable for replacing software with OMV. Fundamentally you need a video output and access to the Bios. Models with Intel CPUs usually meet these requirements.

  • Yes I read about that but I want to make one new omv and get rid of 2 qnaps. So installing omv on one of the qnaps will not help me. :( and the qnaps don't fit my needs anymore

I don't know what model qnaps you already have, but your "wants" sound like a feature list from some of QNAP's more advanced models.

OMV installs on a single SSD/Hdd/USB stick by default and currently there is no option for "tiered storage" in OMV. You can use any 10gbe network card in OMV that is known to work in debian bookworm.

  • Ok that is good to know the tier has not to be automatically. For me this topic is more about hardware recommendations for Mainboard and CPU because I am not so mutch in to hardware :)

If you want hardware recommendations with no specific qualifications set out, you will get 7000 different ones since everyone has a custom build that works for them.

Some are small low power systems. Some large rack mount servers.

Do you want intel or amd cpu? Will your storage be internal or an external chassis? Do you want hardware RAID, software RAID, or a JBOD kind of setup?

Do you want pcie slots for expansion cards? Do you want a GPU that can be used for a media transcoder? How much RAM do you want? What style of case do you want? Etc.

As you can see by that partial list of questions the variations can be endless, and are also driven by a budget. You can build a system with the same capabilities at drastically different prices, all depending on the answers to those questions and the products you pick.

You will have to make those decisions for yourself or have a conversation with someone that is “into hardware” and perhaps can help you fine tune a configuration.

  • If you want to build something more expandable, I´d suggest looking for a motherboard with better connectivity like 10gbe on board, at least 2 pci express slots and more then one NVME slots, as well as as many data ports as possible...there are many NAS cases out there...a processor with video capabilities will save you a pci slot... I´d love if thunderbolt worked with OMV for direct connecting a Mac, but it doesn't apparently...

Networking over thunderbolt was introduced in Linux back in the 4.x kernel days. While the OMV web interface doesn't allow you configure it, you could manually configure it from the command line. I just have never done it since I don't have the hardware.

  • hi everybody at the moment i have omv running on my old QNAP nas to test it and check if is is the right system for me. thanks for your help
