dealing with network interface name end0 on clean debian 12 install on a rock / rpi

  • I have a rock64 and I am trying to install debian 12 then OMV.

    I have sucessfully completed a minimum debian 12 install and now following the guide for rpi install.

    when i run the rpi preinstall script that I think should simply rename my network interface to eth0 something goes wrong. The interface is not renamed and I no longer get a dhcp IP assigned (says link is down). If I delete the file created by the preinstall script I am back to having my interface named end0

    The file created by the script looks ok to me...

    Do I need to run the preinstall script at all? I'm thinking that end0 might be ok?

    Code
    [Match]
    MACAddress=<correct mac address here>
    [Link]
    Name=eth0

    OMV 7 (latest) on N100 Minipc (16GB) and RPI5 (8GB). OS on SD card. System ext4 on SSD. Data BTRFS on HDDs

  • Thanks. I am just following the install guide and this is what the pre-install script for rpi does.

    It does not work running this script on clean netinstall of debian 12 so I wanted to see if I needed to fix this issue before proceeding.

    I think (from memory during omv 7 beta) there could be an issue with the OMV install if you run rpi install script before addressing this

    OMV 7 (latest) on N100 Minipc (16GB) and RPI5 (8GB). OS on SD card. System ext4 on SSD. Data BTRFS on HDDs

  • I'm also thinking why does this not work because I think this is the correct way to do a persistent interface rename in debian...

    OMV 7 (latest) on N100 Minipc (16GB) and RPI5 (8GB). OS on SD card. System ext4 on SSD. Data BTRFS on HDDs

  • So I went ahead and installed omv using the rpi install script and it seems to have worked fine without using the preinstall script.

    Code
    wget -O - https://github.com/OpenMediaVault-Plugin-Developers/installScript/raw/master/install | sudo bash

    I do have a few other minor issues but making good progress on resolving them.

    OMV 7 (latest) on N100 Minipc (16GB) and RPI5 (8GB). OS on SD card. System ext4 on SSD. Data BTRFS on HDDs

    The preinstall script should only be run when a guide tells you to. The armbian and rpi guides tell you to run it. You are using neither. So, you should not run the preinstall script.
