Storage suggestion and filesystem for new NAS build

  • I have recently sourced an AOOSTAR R7 mini pc with following spec:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700U,7nm, 8C/16T, up to 4.3Ghz

    2x 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz running in dual-channel mode

2 Bay NAS compatible with 2.5" SATA or 3.5"HDD (up to 2*20TB).

    2 * M.2 NVMe slots (Up to 2*4TB)

    2 * 2.5G LAN

Current network is based on Ubiquiti Unifi hardware with 1Gb speed (gateway, switch and 2xAP). Intention is to upgrade to 2.5Gb in near future.

Need to source storage for the NAS. Purpose for NAS is to store files and photos.

OMV to collect and occasionally back up photos from different laptops and phones. Trying to migrate all files from iOS/Google Drives to NextCloud.

Idea is to have 4TB NVME as a main storage drive and 12TB WD Red Plus or 12TB IRONWOLF Pro as a back-up drive of 4TB NVME. Intention is to use Rsync and sync drives during the night.Folume of files are small and are kept on different devices therefore no need to have a instant backup off files.

Not sure if I can use Raid 1 in combination with 1x SSD and 1xHDD.

Intention is to add one more 4TB NVME drive, in future when is needed, in Raid 0 to get 8TB.

Current data volume is around 600GB and don’t expect will grow significantly.

As drives are expensive, before sourcing them, is this a good idea? Or is just better to have two HDD in raid 1?

In case of 4tb NVME and 12tb HDD what file system is good option.

Currently I have OMV on mini pc with one 2tb SATA SSD EXT4 and copy of all files on separate 2tb drive.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

You don't need Raid 0 for that, you can add different filesystems to a pool using mergerfs.
