Does anyone know what is going on here?

  • Past few days I've needed to reboot the machine to get it to access the shares. Tonight it was like 5 times to get it access the shares. its working again now, but each time its happened I noticed the cpu usage graph all yellow like you see there. When I go to look at processes though, they look fairly normal and cpu utilization is usually around 44% I checked my system drive and its at 81% utilization as I thought maybe it was full and causing a problem. Any ideas on what I can check?

  • I had a similar problem happening on a couple of OMV6 systems I look after where the OS drive was intermittently unmounting or dropping off the system (sometimes weeks between drops, sometimes months). The OS was still running as it mostly runs in RAM, but the inability to access any other drives since they mount into the /srv directory on the OS drives, kept any access from happening.

I still haven't found the root cause, but as a test I have cloned the OS drive (an nvme) to a spinning disc, and so far it has been stable, but I am not "blessing" the drive change yet.

  • It is time to release-upgrade to OMV7 anyway. Maybe it fixes the issue.

I haven't updated the systems I noticed the issue with, as I don't want them getting hit with a problem that happened on my personal system.

I updated my personal system to OMV7 in January. Back in March or April, a custom fsarchiver script that I have been using for years to do a backup caused major system corruption. This actually happened 3 times before I narrowed it down to fsarchiver, and it all coincided with an update to the backup plugin (I'm not using the backup plugin, but it was installed). I don't believe anything chaned with fsarchiver itself, but there were omv updates and omv-extras/backup plugin updates.

I need to find some time to do an install on a VM and test the custom script with the current build of OMV7, with and without the backup plugin installed before I bring those ones up to V7, as they are also using my custom script for backups. I'm not resisting updating the systems, I just don't want to do it without confirming that it's safe to do so.
